Nowadays, one keeps reading that the strain of business is kill ing off overworked executives; it is giving them heart at tacks. But I am not sure this is true. In order to get light on the matter, I turn ed to the valu able Statistical Bulletin of the M e tropolitan Life Insurance Company. There I see that last year in the age group 45 to 54 2.2 men died to 1 woman. In the age-group 55 to 64, when business burdens are usually great the ratio was 2.1 to 1. At first glance this doubling of the mortality of men as com pared with that of women is im pressive, b.ut we must not jump to the conclusion that it is due to business strain. Why? Because among youngsters, between the ages of 15 and 19, we find that 2.5 boys died to 1 girl. In the ages 20 to 24 the ratio was 2.6 to 1. Certainly, the boys and young men were not yet worry ing terribly about business. Let us look at the problem in another way. Some writers have pointed with alarm to the fact that in the middle years of life there are among persons with a "stomach ulcer" perhaps 3.5 men to 1 woman. They feared the preponderance of ulcers in men was due to business strain. But let us look at the statistics for infants with let us say a con- Mayors Surrounded With Civic Problems Chicago (U.R) Affiliations between American cities and "sister cities" abroad are giving' mayor's duties an international flavor, the American Municipal Association reports. The association said nearly a dozen American cities now have informal affiliations with cities overseas in which their citizens feel they have something in com mon. Individual citizens have start ed the movement in each case, the association said, but mayors, other city officials, clubs and students later have participated. The approach is personal rather than political, and the chief aim is to promote cultural and informational exchanges be tween the communities. The association said cities which have formed the friend ship exchanges include: Hagers town, Md., and Wesel, Germany; Cortland, N. Taking children with a huge colon (large bowel) we find 3.3 boys to 1 girL Taking infections like pneumonia, or birth injuries or stillborn infants, and we find the boys suffering two or three times as often as the girls. Hence we cannot blame the stomach ulcers on business strain. Back around 1913, among men from 45 to 54, 2,434 per 100,000 died (from all causes) while in 1956, in the same age group, 1,011 per 100,000 died. This is a decrease of 58 per cent. Since one would expect the strain of business to have increased in the last 45 years, these figures do not indicate that the present pace is killing. Of late, experts have been pointing out that much of the recent increase in the recorded death rate from coronary disease of the heart can be explained (1) by the increasing percentage of older people in the population, and (2) by the changing fashions in reporting deaths, and increas ing skill in the diagnosis of cor onary disease. When the death rates between 1940 and 195.4 are adjusted for an increase in the average age of the popula tion, the recent increase in deaths from coronary heart dis ease is about 40 per cent in (white) men and about 16 per cent in (white) women. But much of the apparent increase is, as stated above, explainable by the improvement in doctors' diag nose. A death now reported as due to plugging of a coronary artery might have been report ed in 1900 as due to "heart dis ease" or "Bright's disease" or old age. NO CLUES!
