TEN MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE Black Tornado Nabs Twinbill From Grater Comets 6-1, 3-0 SOUTHERN OREGON CONFERENCE STANDINGS W. Grants Fas 3 Crater 1 Klamath Fall 1 Ashland l Medford 1 Pet 1.000 .500 .500 333 .250 Medford high, intent on get ting back into the championship chase, ended its win drouth in Southern Oregon conference baseball by rapping the Crater high Comets on Friday. Tornado diamonders entered the victory side of the league ledger by taking the opener of a doublebill at Central Point 6 to 1. They won the non-count ing second ruckus 3 to 0. A heavy barrage of extra base swatting in the late innings, five hit hurling by Dick McLaugh lin, catcher turned pitcher, and near-flawless fielding manufac tured the conference decision. Larry -Perkins, Dennis King, McLaughlin and Ron Peery were the hard - whacking bats men. Medford pushed over all its runs in the first inning of the second game. . Blanked Four Innings For four innings Friday Comet twirler Fred Herrmann hand cuffed the Black Tornado, allow ing no hits, walking just one man and recording seven strike outs. Then Peery led off the top of the fifth stanza with a fly to deep center field for a three- bagger. Steve Shorey slapped a line single to left field to drive Peerv home with the first run. Perkins, King and McLaugh lin slammed consecutive three basers with none away in the sixth inning for two more runs, and Wayne Allen relieved Herr mann on the hill. Three more counters crossed the plate in the seventh canto. Perkins and Mc Laughlin smashed doubles, fof the second extra base blows of the day. John Payne beat out a bunt for a single. Gordon Ows ley sacrificed. There were an error and wild pitch in the in ning. Neil Green got on base for Crater in the sixth inning and gained home on back to back singles by Dick Rainey and Bob Fowler. The Comets missed one possible opportunity to score in the fifth i nning when Eddie Koch singled, took second on Charlie South's sacrifice and went to third on a wild pitch. Koch was out trying to go home when Thurman Striplin drew a base on balls. McLaughlin in throwing his five hitter racked up five strike outs. He walked three. Herr mann had 10 strikeouts, issued two bases on balls and yielded five hits in his five plus innings on the mound. Allen was tagged for three safeties, fanned one and gave no walks. Singles by Peery and Bob Pond, a base on balls to Owsley, a fielder's option swat by Dennis King and an error were the fac tors in Medford's first inning scoring of th second fuss. Dennis Barr tossed three-hit Coon Hound Trial Slated Spring coon hound field trial of the Southern Oregon Hound Owners association will be held Sunday, April 28. Competition will start at 8:45 ajn. The public is invited without charge for admission. Those wishing to go to the trial are instructed to follow old highway 99 to the Tolo overpass and then follow the signs. Only full trail hounds will be run. Sponsors stated that $200 in prizes guaranteed in the final with $60 and a trophy each for first line and first tree. Priz es will be $40 each for second line and second tree and tro phies will be awarded. Children's race will be for green dogs, those who have not . placed previously in trials. Two other Southern Oregon conference clubs, Ashland and Klamath Falls, had a double header scheduled yesterday but were rained out. They will play April 30. Portland Ends Losing Streak San Diego (U.R) The Port land Bearers put together sin gles by Bob McKee, Bob Adams and Luis Marquez in the top of the ninth Friday night to push across the winning run and grab a 6-5 victory over the San Diegp Padres before 2,089 fans at Lane field. The win was the first of the season for pitcher Bob Alex ander and handed Eddie Erautt his second loss. The Victory ended Portland's losing streak at six games and stopped the current San Diego winning streak at three games. The Beavers broke loose for five unearned runs in the fifth inning for their biggest outburst of the season. The runs came on two hits and four errors. Adult Net Club Organized at CP Central Point An adult ten nis club has been formed here for interclub play on week ends. So far netters from Gold Hill, Sams Valley and Central Point have turned out for play on Crater high's two courts. (U.R) Jimmy Beecham, a diet-conscious "smoothie" from Miami, today attributed his revenge victory over Holly Mims to the seven pounds he lost since last Novem ber. Beecham scaled 153 pounds Friday night when he punched his way to a majority 10-round decision over Mims in their re turn TV fight at the Miami Beach auditorium. That was ex actly seven pounds less than he weighed in their first meeting last Nov. 13, which Mims won on a close decision. start since last year's World Series, in the second inning and opened a 7-3 lead in the fourth. Eagle Point High Winner In Three-Way Phoenix A 155-foot 2Va-inck discus toss by Wayne Christian, Eagle Point, at the least one of the better heaves in the state this season, was a highlight here yesterday as the Eagles won a three-way track meet in the rain, mud and cold. Eagle Point scored 69 16 points. Phoenix got 51 56 and Illinois Valley 22. Phoenix and Eagle Point each won five clear cut firsts and tied for two others. Medford Suspension Of Fighter Suggested Portland "OJ.R) The Portland Boxing Commission has received a recommendation from its phy sician that the suspension of Ewart Potgieter by the Massa chusetts Boxing commission be upheld. Dr. Clinton. McGill said his recommendation was made after telephone conversations with Dr. Philip Henneman of the Massa chusetts General hospital in Bos ton, Mass where Potgieter had an operation to correct a glan dular condition late last year. Dr. Henneman revealed to Dr. McGill that Potgieter had prom ised to return to the hospital one month after the operation after his discharge for further exam ination and, if necessary, for further treatment. The 325-pound South African had been fighting out of Port land. Dr. McGill has recommend ed that he return to Boston, for the examination requested. Men's 2-Ball Tourney Set ' The annual men's two-ball match play golf tournament at Rogue Valley Country club will get underway the first week end in May. Pairings will be determined at a buffet supper set for7 p.m., May 3, at the club. High handi cappers will draw low handicap pers for partners. Match play willo pen on Saturday, May 4. Boston School Teacher Wins Overland Classic Boston U.R) Johnny Kelley, a school teacher from Groton, Conn., brought Boston A.A. Mar athon laurels back to America for the first time in 12 years Saturday winning the overland classic by half a mile. Kelley, a boyish-looking" 25, turned in a time of two hours, 20 minutes and five seconds as he breezed past the finish line looking nearly as fresh as when he started the 26 mile, 385 yard grind. This was the 61st run ning, of the race. Jansen, a former Seal, kept the crowd of 2,140 quiet for most of the afternoon and was in little trouble, especially after Seattle scored four times in the third to lead by 5-0. The win squared the series at two games apiece and dropped the Seals out of the league lead at least temporarily. Seattle got on the board with a first inning run on a bunt by Maurie Wills, a double by Leo Righetti and an infield out by Bill Glynn. In the third Righetti was safe on Ken Aspromonte's error, Glynn singled and Joe Taylor singled in a run. Jim Dyck then doubled home two more and Juan Delis singled in the fourth one of the frame. In the fifth Taylor homered and in the sixth Jansen hit a home run over the screen in center field. It was the first win against a loss for Jansen and also gave the same record to loser Walt Masterson who was followed to the mound by Jim Konstanty, Tom Hurd and Bill Abernatie.
