Medford high, intent on get
ting back into the championship
chase, ended its win drouth in
Southern Oregon conference
baseball by rapping the Crater
high Comets on Friday.
Tornado diamonders entered
the victory side of the league
ledger by taking the opener of
a doublebill at Central Point 6
to 1. They won the non-count
ing second ruckus 3 to 0.
A heavy barrage of extra base
swatting in the late innings, five
hit hurling by Dick McLaugh
lin, catcher turned pitcher, and
near-flawless fielding manufac
tured the conference decision.
Larry -Perkins, Dennis King,
McLaughlin and Ron Peery
were the hard - whacking bats
men. Medford pushed over all
its runs in the first inning of the
second game. .
Blanked Four Innings
For four innings Friday Comet
twirler Fred Herrmann hand
cuffed the Black Tornado, allow
ing no hits, walking just one
man and recording seven strike
outs. Then Peery led off the top
of the fifth stanza with a fly to
deep center field for a three-
bagger. Steve Shorey slapped a
line single to left field to drive
Peerv home with the first run.
Perkins, King and McLaugh
lin slammed consecutive three
basers with none away in the
sixth inning for two more runs,
and Wayne Allen relieved Herr
mann on the hill. Three more
counters crossed the plate in the
seventh canto. Perkins and Mc
Laughlin smashed doubles, fof
the second extra base blows of
the day. John Payne beat out a
bunt for a single. Gordon Ows
ley sacrificed. There were an
error and wild pitch in the in
ning. Neil Green got on base for
Crater in the sixth inning and
gained home on back to back
singles by Dick Rainey and Bob
Fowler. The Comets missed one
possible opportunity to score in
the fifth i nning when Eddie
Koch singled, took second on
Charlie South's sacrifice and
went to third on a wild pitch.
Koch was out trying to go home
when Thurman Striplin drew a
base on balls.
McLaughlin in throwing his
five hitter racked up five strike
outs. He walked three. Herr
mann had 10 strikeouts, issued
two bases on balls and yielded
five hits in his five plus innings
on the mound. Allen was tagged
for three safeties, fanned one
and gave no walks.
Singles by Peery and Bob
Pond, a base on balls to Owsley,
a fielder's option swat by Dennis
King and an error were the fac
tors in Medford's first inning
scoring of th second fuss.

Seals, 7-0;
Jansen Hits
San Francisco U.R Veteran
Larry Jansen blanked the San
Francisco Seals on five hits Sat
urday and drove out a home
run to lead the Seattle Rainier
to a 7-0 Pacific Coast League
victory.
Jansen, a former Seal, kept
the crowd of 2,140 quiet for
most of the afternoon and was
in little trouble, especially after
Seattle scored four times in the
third to lead by 5-0.
The win squared the series at
two games apiece and dropped
the Seals out of the league lead
at least temporarily.
Seattle got on the board with
a first inning run on a bunt by
Maurie Wills, a double by Leo
Righetti and an infield out by
Bill Glynn.
In the third Righetti was safe
on Ken Aspromonte's error,
Glynn singled and Joe Taylor
singled in a run. Jim Dyck then
doubled home two more and
Juan Delis singled in the fourth
one of the frame.
In the fifth Taylor homered
and in the sixth Jansen hit a
home run over the screen in
center field.
It was the first win against
a loss for Jansen and also gave
the same record to loser Walt
Masterson who was followed to
the mound by Jim Konstanty,
Tom Hurd and Bill Abernatie.
