t sports! New World Marks Held By Natators Beverly Hills, Calif. U.R) A girl swimmer from Washing ton and two others from Cali fornia reigned as new. world rec ord holders today following the 1597 National AAU Senior Women's swimming aand diving championships. The three day meet, which concluded Thursday night, also produced a stunning diver who could conceivably emerge as a successor to retired Olympic champion Pat McCormick, Several swimming records were broke more than once in the championships, but the of ficial results showed a total of three new world marks, four new American standards and five new national records. Two of the new world records were established in last night's final competition by pretty Carin Cone of Ridgeway, N.J., and Nancy Ramey, 16-year-old swim Tning sensation from Seattle, Wash. The ther world mark was set earlier in the meet by a 14-year-old Sylvia Rnnska of Berkeley, Calif, -gnashed Old Record Miss Cone set a new world mark of 1:03.8 in the 100 yard backstroke, smashing the old standard of 1:04.6 set by G. Wielma of Holland in 1950. Miss Ramey, of the Washing ton Athletic club, churned to a new world standard of 1:01.9 in the 100 yard butterfly event. Earlier Thursday she toured the course in 1:02.8 in a heat, race, which also broke the old world mark of 1:04.1 set by Shelley Mann, of Washington D.C., in 1956. Paula Jean Myers, UnfVersity of Southern California coed from Montrose, Calif., emerged from the concluding round as a double diving winner. Miss Meyers, who won the one meter crown earlier in the championships, came through to win the three meter . title in the finals. Little Miss Ruuska not only set a world mark of 5:08 flat in the 400 yard individual medley but also broke the American and national records in the 500 yard free-style with a clocking of 5:47.8. Bobby Garrett Key Player in Pro Grid Trade Cleveland (U.R) Coach Paul Brown of the rebuilding Cleve land Browns today tagged quar terback Bobby Garrett the key man in the eight-player deal be tween Cleveland and the Green Bay Packers Thursday. The Browns gave up quarter back Vito Babe Parilli and five others to obtain Garrett and line backer Roger Zatkoff from the Packers. The other Cleveland players were defensive halfbacks John Petitbon and Billy Kinard, offemsive guard John Macerelli, defensive end Carlton Massey and linebacker Sam Palumbo. Brown indicated that he was counting heavily on Garrett to solve the Cleveland quarterback problem that has existed since the retirement of Otto Graham after the 1955 season and was a major factor in the Browns' loss of their Eastern Division NFL crown. Writer raracte Qf New York :U.R) Eieht years of frustration may be over to day for Gino Cimoli because of a "Dutch uncle" lecture from the "old pro" of the Brooklyn Dodgers. Big, fast, and the owner of a strong arm, Cimoli always had baseball talent. The one thing he lacked was determina tion. Roy Campanella, who has Ig nored injuries and age because "we're lucky to be ball players," finally couldn't take Cimoli's at titude any longer and the law he laid down may have "made" young Gino. The new attitude already has started to pay off. Gino won the season's opener with a home run and in two games already has equalled the four hits he made in 36 at bats all last sea son. Didn't Give Hoot "I have to thank Campy for everything," says the 27-year- Services Set For Sweeney On Monday Los Angeles Rosary will be recited here Sunday for Wil liam Sweeney, veteran baseball manager who ' was one of the most colorful figures in the Pa cific Coast league. ' The big, jovial Irishman, who won three PCL pennants during his 19 years as a manager, died at Mercy hospital in San Diego, Calif., Thursday after major surgery for a perforated ulcer. He was52. Sweeney, manager of the Portland-Beavers at the time of his death, was regarded with1 re spect not only by his west coast colleagues but throughout the baseball world. Three Years In Majors Over the span of years, Sweeney played three years as a first baseman in the major leagues and once was away from the PCL to coach the Detroit Tigers in 1947-48. He still holds a PCL fielding record for first base, a .997 mark set in 1938 at Portland. But he made his mark as a manager, piloting not only Port land but Los Angeles, Holly wood and Seattle in the PCL. The baseball world was "shocked" by the passing of Sweeney, whose mushy counte nance and wry humor earned him the affectionate nickname of "Tomato Face." "The Pacific Coast league has suffered a tremendous loss," said PCL president Leslie O'Connor. "Bill was highly regarded by players, umpires and fans. Above all, he was a sweet-natured per son." Reqiem mass for Sweeney will be celebrated Monday at the church of th Holy Angeles in his hometown of nearby Arcadia. ' He leaves a widow and son, Mike, 17. McMurtry, notching his 24th win against one defeat in 26 professional starts, was unsbie to solve Romero's jabbing style in the early rounds. His talents were so obvious that, at 19, he was able to squeeze a $20,000 bonus out of Branch Rickey, no mean feat in itself. The Yanks, Indians, Red Sox, Phils and Pirates all were after him. He has been, until now, a dis tinct disappointment. Last year he rode the Brooklyn bench ex cept when used as .a late inning defensive replacement. His new attitude put him in left field, long a Brooklyn sore spot, as the season opened. And, from the new look in his eyes, Gino is going to be mighty dif ficult to get out of there. Bray said that he and his wife had six strikes in two days of fishing and landed five of the fish. He caught four and Mrs. Bray one. Weight of the largest was estimated at 45 pounds.
