Industry added four new cor porate billionaires in 1956, climaxing another booming year of economic growth. Lilt Almost Doubled The list of billion-dollar giants has almost doubled since the end of World War II, mirroring the nation's fabulous postwar growth and prosperity. The 81 companies in the "bil lion dollar club" had assets ag gregating $241,447,251,425 at the end of 1956. That was equi valent to more than $1,400 for each man, woman and child now living in the United States. At the end of 1955, these 81 firms boasted total assets of $228,315,487,311. The sharp in crease recorded in 1956 reflected the record $35 billion spent for expansion and modernization by companies producting everything from hairpins to automobiles. Bell Ranks First The Bell Telephone System re tained its ranking as the world's biggest business enterprise with total assets of $16,206,571,233. It was the first time assets of any company had ever topped $16 billion. - Metropolitan Life was the next biggest, followed in order by Prudential Insurance, Bank of America, Equitable Life Assur ance Society, and Standard Oil Co. (New Jersey). America has a virtual monop oly on corporate billionaires. England has a few such giants, Including Royal Dutch-Shell, Im perial Chemicals and British Petroleum. Canada lists Alumi nium, Canadian Pacific Railroad, Canadian National Railways and two banks in this exclusive group. The newcomers to the Ameri ca list last year were Massachu m e 1 1 s Investors Trust, the na to's oldest and biggest invest atemt company; Chesapeake & Oki Railway, the seventh rail Mad to join; Detroit Bank & Trust Co., the 25th bank in the Conviction Upheld For Josephine Man Sale m (U.R) Conviction of William Lester Schleigh, Jose phine county, of wilfully, and valiciously setting a fire has keen affirmed by the Oregon Supreme Court. Schleigh contended that a pur ported confession was not suf ficiene to warrant his convic tion without some other proof of the crime, but the high court held that all the evidence in the case was ample to establish the crime." The court said the trial jury was entitled to assume that sat or eight fires do not start by spontaneous combustion along both sides of a road, all within 30 minutes. The jurists noted that evidence showed such fires started immediately after the passing of a red pickup truck occupied by Schleigh and hisj father. Conviction of the father, Wil liam Clarence Schleigh, on- the same charge was also affirmed by the court. Of the 81 companies in the list, all but 13 showed increases in total assets during 1956. Eight of the companies suffering de clines in assets were banks. Nation's Biggest Employers The companies included in the list affect almost every facet of American life. They are the na tion's biggest employers, its big gest corporate taxpayers and the most popular with the nation's investors. The billion dollar club is one of the barometers of the na tion's postwar economic growth. Eetween 1776 and 1945 a per iod that included the dazzling 1920s a total of 43 companies joined the billionaire ranks. From 1946 on the list has grown by 38, almost double. The latest roll of billionaire firms consists of 25 banks, 22 Supervisors Named In Soil District Cave Junction Assistant supervisors and committeemen were named last Friday at the first regular meeting of the Illi nais Valley Soil Conservation district since elections were held at the annual conclave in March. Appointed as assistant super visors to represent various dis tricts were Ray Ellstrom, district ranger at the Illinois Valley Ranger Station; Howard Brock, state fire warden, and John Moe, fire warden for the state for estry department in the Illinois Valley. To head the forestry commit tee is E- W. (Jiggs) Morris, whose committee includes Frank Loos ley, M. A. Sprague, Ray Frost and Wilmer Wheeler. Arthur A. Whitesell, owner of the largest tree farm in the valley, is chair man of the tree farm committee. Chairman of the equipment committee is Hay Waldron. His assistants are Ashby Fulk, Ray Frost, Dave Rendro, B. F. (Bud) Randolph, and Walter England, who is also the drag line oper ator. , Ralph Burns and Ray Mc Carty, county agents, have been named on the education com mittee, while on publicity are Harry Clark, county agent, chairman; James McDermott, Helen Bottel and Allan Mark ley. Ray Nickerson was appoint ed chairman of the Soil Conser vation District water resources board. Other members are Ar thus Whitesell, B. J. Randolph, Roy Waldron, Len Schaeffer and William Klein. - Bowman to Speak at Cave Junction Meeting Cave Junction Quentin .Bow man, a member of the State Re sources board, Salem, will speak at the Illinois Valley Water Re sources group meeting at 8 p.m. Monday at the high school voca tional agriculture building.
