Here are some dressing sugges tions for marinating cooked-just-until-tend,er asparagus or for use as a regular salad dressing. Vinaigrette Dressing. Combine six tablespoons olive or salad oil, three tablespoons vinegar, one-half teaspoon dry mustard, one tablespoon chopped chives, one split clove garlic and salt add pepper to taste; beat or Aake well. Remove garlic after (billing. Horseradish French Dressing. Add one teaspoon horseradish to one-half cup French dressing. Beat or shake well. Perhaps, you'll like a bit more horserad ish. Piquant Dressing. Combine one-fourth cup salad or olive oil, two tablespoons vinegar, two tablespoons chili sauce, one-half teaspoon prepared h o rs eradish and one-half teaspoon salt. Beat or shake well. Mustard Dressing. Comb ine one-half cup French dressing, two teaspoons prepared mustard and one-half teaspoon Worcester shire sauce; beat or shake well. Each recipe sufficient for 13A pounds asparagus. Hearty Onion Soup Spring may be here, but chances are we're still going to have some chilly weather. . .And cold weather and hearty soups like this macaroni-onion soup are natural go-togethers. Melt one-fourth cup butter or margarine in large saucepan. Add two cups sliced onions and cook gently, stirring frequently until onions are light brown. Add one quart hot water, four bouillon cubes, one teaspoon Worcestershire sauce and one half teaspoon salt. Bring to a boil stirring constantly until bouillon cubes are dissolved. Add four ounces elbow macaroni and stir about one minute or until water is back to a full boil. Lower heat, cover and simmer gently about 20 minutes. Serve hot with grated Parmesan cheese. Makes four large serv ings Salmon Saute. If you like salmon, you'll love this. Plan one salmon steak per serving. Place salmon in shallow greased baking dish; season with salt and pepper. Now cover with 'commercial sour cream. Top with a thin lemon slice and' sprinkle with parsley. Bake in moderate, 350 degree oven for 40 minutes. of our RENTALS FRONT END LOADERS - DRAGLINE, SHOVELS, DUMP TRUCKS & A D-8 DOZER L "TEX" Medford - Friday, April 12, 1957 Sour Cream Pot Roast Is Conrersation Piece Dress up your next pot roast with sour cream and you'll have a veritable queen of pot roasts that will easily become a con versation piece of friends suid family. 3V4 to 4 pound pot roast 2 medium onions 1 clove garlic 3 tablespoons shortening 1 tablespoon salt 1 cup commercial sour cream 1 cup water 4 to 5 ounce package noodles Slice onions and mince garlic. Melt shortening in Dutch oven or other heavy utensil. Add on ions and garlic and cook until light brown. Remove to plate. Rub meat with salt and brown well in Dutch oven. Combine sour cream with water and pour over meat. Top with onions and garlic. Cover and cook over low heat or in a moderate, 325 de gree, oven for 21. hours or until tender. When roast is almost done, cook noodles according to package instructions. Remove roast from pan and make gravy from drippings, adding to it the sour cream and onion mix ture spooned from top of roast. Season to taste with salt, pepper and paprika. Serve noodles and meat topped with gravy. Makes six good sized servings. Chocolate Coconut Marshmallows These tender morsels of sweet ness will delight you. A perfect blend of chocolate, marshmal lows and coconut or chopped nut meats. Makes three dozen can dies. PLANT N ASM Phones 2-4317-3-5071 2 squares unsweetened chocolate Vi cup sugar 1 cup evaporated milk 2 tablespoons butter 18 marshmallows (4V ounces) 2 cups tender-thin flaked coco nut OR 1 cup chopped nut meats Combine chocolate, sugar and milk in saucepan. Place over low heat and stir until chocolate is melted. Bring to a boil and boil gently stirring constantly, until mixture thickens, about five minutes. Remove from heat and add butter. Cool to room temp erature. Cut marshmallows in half. . Dip in chocolate mixture, one at a time, and roll in coco nut or nuts. Spring Vegetables. Pork, Eggs, Fish and Shellfish Head Buys Vegetables from A to Z are yours for the choosing from" col lorful vegetable displays at your favorite market. For those who can't immediately think what the "A" and "Z" vegetables we have in mind are, they're arti chokes and zucchini squash. However, it is true that they are not the best buys, although both are availabe at reasonable prices. Best vegetable buys right now are tender, sweet, golden car rots to be bought in bunches by the pound or topped and pack aged in cellophane bags; top quality asp aragus, celery, let tuce, spinach and both green and white onions. Long white and russet potatoes are bargain priced. New potato supplies are increasing. Fresh green peas are wonderfully bood and well worth the efforj of shelling. Cab bage, cauliflower, radishes and cucumbers are r e a sonably priced. Broccoli is going into a seasonal slump. Rhubarb sup plies (both hot house and field gown) are good. Meat Department. P o r k is most attractively priced item here. Plenty of good sausage, bacon and ham for making extra good breakfasts. Loin cuts (chops and roasts), spareribs and should ers are all well priced. New crop lamb is increasing in supply, but more reasonable prices mark the older heavier lambs. Beef and veal continue about the same. Good buys in stewing cuts and in ground meat for patties, meat loaves and meat sauces. Eggs and Poultry. Happily for family' food-shoppers the plenti ful egg story continues. A sur plus of . chickens, particularly broilers and fryers, make prices so low as to make their pur chase paraetically mandatory. Tiii-lrovc n ar anintr n t verv good prices. If you have a freez-fl er, now is a good time to stock up. Watch our ads for specials. Fish and Shellfish. Frozen hal ibut and sole are plentiful with good supplies of rockfish, sal mon, crab, oysters and shrimp among local favorites. Fillets and fish sticks are readily available; quickly prepared at moderate cost. Canned tuna is frequently specialed. , Fruit buys are seasonally limited. Most abundant and of excellent .quality are oranges and grapefruit. Apples, avoca dos, bananas and pears are moderately priced. Not so in strawberries are putting in an appearance. Post offices across the nation were instructing most carriers and clerks to stay home Satur day in compliance with Post master General Arthur E. Sum merfield's order to close all first, second and third class postal sta tions and halt Saturday deliver ies. Some postmasters, however, said they were geared to remain open and make deliveries Satur day if Congress gives Summer field assurance today that the Post Office Department will get $47 million in emergency funds. A department spokesman said Thursday that a vote granting the funds by the House Ap propriations Committee alone will be sufficient immediate as surance to the-department. The committee was scheduled to meet today. San Francisco Postmaster John F. Fixa said post offices have no option to deliver mail on Saturdays if Summerfield orders service suspended. Fixa estimated the San Francisco pay roll savings would amount to $400,000 between Saturdpy and June 30, end of the fiscal year. Postal authorities in most cities planned to make only special deliveries Saturday.
