Senate Committee Approves Bonds To Straighten Road Salem U.R A bill to au thorize the State Highway de partment to issue $12,60Q$00 in bonds to straighten out curves and modernize the Oregon Coast highway between , Gold Beach and Brot kings was reported out favorably to the Senate Thurs day by its Committee on Roads and Highways. The measure, Seriate Bill 308, was sponsored by Sens. R. F. Chapman of Coos Bay and An drew J. Naterlin o! Newport. The Senate passed State Bill 8, making less severe the terms of relative responsibility in wel fare cases. Under the law as it stands, a person making more than S2.700 a year has some re sponsibility for a relative . on welfare. Under Senate Bill ' 8, the responsibility would start for a person with an annual in come of more than $4,000. Senate Joint Memorial 8 was introduced Thursday, calling on Congress in its current session to grant statehood to Alaska and Hawaii. The bill was variously des cribed as one which would give California the strictest campaign reporting law in the nation and a measure which was unconsti tutional and would deny the right of anyone to participate in a political campaign. Assemblyman Thomas Rees (D-Los Angeles) described his bill as one to "compel candi dates to account for all money received in campaigns and to make the fullest public disclos ure of where the money went." It was doubted, however, that many Republican I a w m a kers will go so far as to make a clean break with the administration. These conclusions were sug gested by estimates of s e n ior GOP senators after they read the President's latest defense of his legislative program and his S72 billion budget at Wednes day's news conference. Must Meet Problems E is e n hower's comment was prompted by a question mention ing Monday's Senate speech by Sen. Barry M. Goldwater (R Ariz.), who said the administra tion budget repudiated 1952 GOP campaign pledges. The President said the gov ernment could not go back to practices of 1890, but must dev elop new approaches to meet new problems. Developing such approaches, he said, results in a clash of opinions. Stoutly defending his peace time record $71,800,000,000 bud get, he said, "I believe profound ly in the things that-we have proposed as necessary . for this country, and in other cases we have programs that have been with us for years." "There is no chance of revers ing them and, indeed, there is probably o n 1 y a very few of them that should be dropped." Opposed To Spending What appears to be the domi nant GOP view in Congress is that there is a public demand too strong to be ignored for budget reductions. This single fact has beefed up -Republican and Democratic op position to parts of the Eisen hower legislative program, par ticularly those that cost money. As one Republican senator put it: "More and more you're going to find Republicans in the Sen ate taking their own position on various issues without re gard for the administration posi tion." If this attitude prevails, it could mean serious trouble for the administration program in Congress. AH! 'TIS SPRING Joliet, 111 (U.R) Three city water department employees will be suspended because of spring fever. City Manager Ches ter B. Lorris ordered the one day suspension after he discov ered the employees were pick ing dandelion greens when they should have been repairing the city water pump. Dr. Woodell Named To Select Student Ashland Dr. Marshall Wood ell, acting chairman of the so cial science department at the Southern Oregon college, has been appointed to guide the se lection of an SOC candidate for the position of research interm on the Washington, staff of Sen. Richard. L. Neuberger. The position was created by Neuberger to encourage student interest in political science and government. It provides for a regular salary and a valuable experience for a graduate stu dent who demonstrates a strong interest and ability in political science. Any student of senior rating in any Oregon college or univer sity is eligible for selection to the position. One candidate from each school will be selected, and these candidates will be in terviewed by a committee which will make the final selection. According to Dr. Woodell, a candidate from Southern Oregon college will be selected in the near future on the basis of high academic and character stand ing and a strong interest in the position. STOLEN: ONE CAROUSEL Los Angeles (U.R) Police Friday were looking for a thief who is going around in circles. Amusement park operator Ralf Pludow reported Thursday that someone stole his yellow and red carousel. He said it had 15 seats and weighed 1,000 pounds. I want my wife to go out to work. Betty R. I'm in a rut, but I'm comfortable. ' David R. I know a lot of people would not think very well of me' for this, but T am pretty, sure I'm right. I want my wife to go out to work. ' When I married Betty, she was an extrmeely successful young career girl. She was full of ambition, but said it was more important for her to be a wife and mother, and she quit her job. . We now have two children aged 12 and 14. They are in school nearly all day and are quiet self-sufficient. We live in a small apartment and both the children and I cooperate in the home.. ' Betty really has very little to do, yet she manages to spend days and weeks in trifling de tails. She . used to be so much fun to be with, but now she has nothing to talk about but the price of eggs.- If Betty went back to work, it would make a big difference in our economic situation. We'd be .able to do a lot more for the children. Why should Betty waste herself? ' Betty R. I may have become just a household drudge and duller than dishwater, but my husband does not realize that I cannot go back to what-1 was 20 years ago in any way. When I married, I was mak ing an excellent salary and had a supervisory position. I haven't the energy or ambition to take on such a job today even if somebody were to offer it to me. The truth is that I'd have to start in again way down at the bottom doing routine things, taking orders . from people younger than I am. I'd hate that. And how much money could I make? My pay check might be about the same as it was years ago, but in terms of what, it could buy, it would be a lot less. Besides, I don't feel as though I'd like to be cooped up in "an office all day now that I've grown so accustomed to free dom. , It's true that I'm wasting a lot of good background and I could do my housework in much less time, but I prefer taking things easy. I'm in a rut, I know, but I'm comfortable in it. Tha Council: Caring for a home, a husband and two ado lescent children does not have to be a "rut," but in Betty's case it appears to be just that. She doesn't express any positive de sire to create a better home set ting for her family and, accord ing to her statement, only the negative factors of dislike of routine and taking orders now keep her at home. She is prob ably not quite as "comfortable" as she tells herself, since she is conscious of wasting time and background. This may not be the right mo ment for Betty to move out of her home into the job world be cause her children are a little young to be left entirely unsu pervised, but it is the right mo ment for Betty to think about the course of her life in the very near future. It won't be long be fore her children are 'entirely on their own. She now has the youth and time to seek out areas of interest that will afford her stimulation in the years to come. David is distressed by her sluggish attitude. She won't be able to snap out of that without an effort. Betty would do well to look into the opportunities for wom en of , her age. There . may be more than she believes. Many women, who have spent years in the home, go back to work at Betty's age and some rise to new heights of success. The ad justment may be a little diffi cult at first, but Betty will be able to surmount the rather pet ty difficulties she foresees if she bears in mind that she will prob ably be much happier in the long run if she is active. .Of course, a job is not the only road toward activity and a fresher viewpoint, but many women have found it the best. Betty would do well to experi ment and find out whether work or club activities would suit her best. She can also take courses to brush up on her old skills at this time, so that she -will be ready for a better job if she de cides in favor of . the business world. (Copyright 1957, General Feature.
