Mrs. Porter was granted a di vorce Wednesday on testimony that her husband preferred his pet dogs to her. Midgets Seeking Better Conditions Reno, Nev. U.R The Midg ets of America drew up pint sized resolutions today aimed at making it a better world for little people. The 27 delegates planned to take up such vital matters as the height of phones in public booths, how to squeeze onto a rush hour bus and the facilities in rest rooms. Another matter of grave con cern was the problem of clothes. Most midgets have to have all their clothes tailored and their shoes hand made. They said "big people" should be aware of their plight. There are about' 160 midgets in the United States. Until now, they have had no organization. However, they met at the River-side Hotel Wednesday and de cided to form the Midgets of America and to set up perma nent headquarters here. The ho- tel gave them free rooms and meals at half price. Iowa produces one-sixth of the nation's entire corn crop in an average year. Crow, University of Wisconsin genetics department, says there is no such thing as a "safe" amount of radiation. "Medical and dental x-ray and fluoroscopic examinations are necessary to scientific medicine, but, in my opinion," such things as x-ray shoe-fitting machines are likely to do more harm than good," Crow said. Most mutations resulting from radiations which reach the re productive cells and are passed on to succeeding generations do not have conspicuous results, the genecist said. "They simply add to our ex isting health burdens by making persons more prone to disease, or by shortening life, or causing impairment of body functions in many ways." Red Cross Tells Recruitment Need The Spring recruitment pro gram of the American Red Cross is now in progress, Mrs. Helen A. Wilson announced at the last meeting of the Red Cross volun teer services' chairman and co chairman. The date for recruitment of volunteers is May 28 in the aud itorium of the Jackson county courthouse. Volunteers are need ed to assist in the blood program, Junior Red Cross, staff aides, and gray lady service. All persons in terested in this type of service are asked to call the Red Cross office for registration. At the meeting the Blqodmo bile visit next Tuesday in Med ford was announced with the quota of 290 pints and 350 do nors. The need for blood was stressed by the chairman. The Bloodmobile will be in Ashland Wednesday, April 10. Reports were made on the monthly activities and were given by Mrs. Harry P. Poston, gray lady to the community; Mrs. Grace Fiero, canteen; Mrs. Clarice Spatz, staff aides; Mrs. T. K. Oliver, blood program; Mrs. Martin Luther, recruitment; Mrs. Frances Flinn, hospital service; Mrs. Wilson, Junior Red Cross; Mrs. John S. Day, home service; and Mrs.' Robert J. Kenney announced the appoint ment of Mrs. Raymond Reter as the Red Cross representative to serve on the United Medford Crusade Board. The meeting, which was also attended by Mrs., Aimee Deuel and Mrs. Roy V. Rickard, was held at the home of Mrs. Spatz, 20 North Groveland. Operation 'Spill' May Spread Cancer Chicago (U.R) Cancer may occur in many patients because deadly cell "crumbs" spill over during an operation and seed the system with lethal cancer colon ies. This is the conclusion of a growing number of scientists, ac cording to the American Cancer society. , The Society's Illinois division reported that scientists at. the University of Illinois College of Medicine have begun a program to combat such risks. A group working with Dr. Warren H. Cole, immediate past president of the American Col lege of Surgeons, has shown ex perimentally that prophylactics could overtake and destroy cells escaping from a cancer. The experimenters have adopt ed surgical technique and drugs designed to protect patients from the lethal spillage of can cer cells during an operation. Measures now considered mand atory in operations for cancer of the breast, colon, rectum and stomach include: Tying off early all blood ves sels serving the operative area and injecting a drug into the abdominal cavity or veins at the end of the operation. Bathing the area with a so lution capable of killing any can cer cells that might have spilled over. Injecting drugs for three days after surgery into veins to chase down and destroy any cancer cells that might have ecaped into the bloodstream.'
