There are aout 17,000,000 women holding jobs in the Unit ed States at this time. However, despite this vast number of ca reer women engaged in business In this country, there are only 860 females holding important executive positions. Why is this? Do women lack the intelligence and other characteristics re quired to make good executives? Or is it because so many people of both sexes do not care to work for a woman executive? Or is it a matter of discrimina tion? Asking Queries from clients. Q. You aid the lyrics of the popular song, "Three O'Clock in the Morning," were written by The odora Morse. Sigmund Spaeth credits one Dorothy Terris with writing these lyrics. Who is right? A. We are both right. It is as I said. Theodora Morse wrote the lyrics for the song re ferred to but in so doing used the pseudonym, Dorothy Terris. At the time the song was written Theodora was the wife of the celebrated song writer, Theodore Morse. She, therefore, thought it wise to use the pseudonym, Dor othy Terris, to avoid the possi bility of having the lyrics of "Three O'Clock in the Morning" mistakenly credited to her hus band. Blondes Ava Gardner is reported to have become an ash blonde. Many natural brunettes are do ing likewise. This brings to mind that shop in Midtown Manhat tan which displays a sign read ing, "Why not be a dazzling ash blonde? We can make you one. It is our specialty." I have seen quite a few ash blondes strolling about recently. But none that has dazzled me. I guess I just don't appreciate the type. Sidelights Am asked if Queen Elizabeth of England smokes an American brand of cigarettes. Queen Eliza beth has never smoked. It is Princess Margaret who is the chain cigarette srr';er in that family ... An expression much overworked on television and which should be given a long va cation is, "as a matter of fact." The next time you have steak for dinner you take 75 per cent of said steak and give your wife 25 per cent. There is no reason for her to eat more than she needs. Besides if she cuts down on her eating a little it will help her appearance in a bath ing suit. Or to be able to feature an hour glass figure style. PI Scientists Seek Invisible Walls To Contain Hot Artificial Star BY JOSEPH L. MYLER United Press Correspondent Washington (U.P.) Scientists are striving to build invisible walls mighty enough to hold an artificial star twice as hot as the sun. If they succeed, man's con stantly growing demand for power will for all practical purposes be forever appeased. That briefly, is the story of Project Sherwood, the Atomic Energy Commission's multimillion-dollar research quest for a way to harness the H-bomb's fusion reactions for peacetime power. As AEC Chairman Lewis L. Strauss told reporters at a news conference Monday "Power from fission the A-bomb reaction is here today a constantly ex panding reality. Power from iu- Smokejumpers Class Set at Cave Junction Cave Junction A total of 51 smokejumpers will be trained at the forest service Siskiyou aerial project here this summer. Twenty-three of them will move on to the newly formed project at Redding by July 15. According to James Allen, Siskiyou project supervisor, the summer crew will be reduced this year from 49, the 1956 total, to about 28. This because the Redding project will provide smokejumper for northern Cali fornia areas formerly protected by local crews. To replace the old wooden jump tower this summer will be an all-metal surplus beacon tow er, formerly used by the Civil Aeronautics administration near Glendale. Allen and squad lead er, Orville Looper and ,Phil Clark Jr. dismantled and trans ported the tower to its new site at the airport on the Redwood highway here. It will be ready for use when training starts in June, and will condition men to air shock be fore they make their first actual flight jumps. Notes Progress But "encouraging progress is beign made and certain discover ies are narrowing our approach to the major scientific problems involved" in controlling hydro gen power and making it a ser vant of peace. The sun and stars continual ly manufacture power from fu sion in amounts too enormous for the average mind to grasp. Stra uss said he is "more confident than ever" that man can do it too though the difficulties are great. In man's case, the container for a fusion power reactor can not be of any material substance. At the temperatures involved, a material container would flash instantly and violently into vapor. So, lacking the gravitational forces which hold superheated gases together at the sun's center, man must fashion a container of another kind. As an approach to doing that, scientists have thought up the "stellarator," otherwise known as a "magnetic bottle." It is a device for holding hot electrified gases together in non-material walls of sheer magnetic force. Fusion Controlable The trick is to bunch such gases long enough for several millionths of a second, at least for them to fuse and liberate power in the form of electrical current.- The sun's fuel is ordinary hyd rogen. It fuses hydrogen nuclei to make helium and energy. Its gravitational forces are powerful enough to hold the reacting nu clei together even at tempera tures of 50 million degrees fahr enheit. Though man has a better fuel in the heavy hydrogen inex haustibly available in the seas, he has to resort to higher tem peratures, 100 million degrees or more. And he cannot invoke the forces of gravitation which serve the sun and stars. Nobody knows exactly what a hydrogen power plant will look like, but Strauss is certain it will be immense by present power plant standards and will cost "scores of million of dollars." But, said Strauss, "We are making progress." He quoted a scientist as saying: "Anyone who thinks fusion cannot be controlled is a fool; but anyone who thinks it is go ing to be easy is an idiot." San Francisco Firm Low Bidder for Pipe Apparent low bidder for 15,- 360 feet of cast iron pipe for the city water department is the U.S. Pipe and Foundry company, San Francisco, according to Rob ert Lee, city water superintend ent. The company's bid to supply 12, eight, six and four-inch me chanical joints was $40,047.40 Lee said. The large supply of extension pipe, which is pur chased by the city about once a year, is intended to cover all city water projects for the re mainder of 1957,. he said. Only other bidder was the Pa cific States Cast Iron Pipe com pany, Provo, Utah. They submit ted a bid of $40,156.58 Lee said. Awarding the contract will be considered Wednesday by the water commission. Bids for the pipe were opened Monday. Prices Increased on 18 Brands of Liquor Portland (U.R) Retail prices on 18 brands of liquor weres in creased from 5 to 45 cents a fifth yesterday by the Oregon State Liquor Control commis sion. The prices resulted from price boosts by distilleries selling stocks to the commission. The new prices add 10 cents a fifth to 10 brands, 15 cents to four brands, and 5, 20, 30 and 45 cents to four other brands. The increases follow a trend started Jan. 1 when prices on 53 brands of liquor were increased. At a 40-mile an hour cruising speed the average fuel economy of 29 different makes of auto mobiles has been increased by about 30 per cent in the interval from 1930 to 1950. JyM !' During the same hour, the CTA said, 15,000 persons go south in autos on North Lake Shore Drive. The drive is crowd ed to capacity during the rush period. Virgil E. Gunlock, CTA board chairman, pointed out that it would cost hundreds of millions of dollars to build two more superhighways such as Lake Shore Drive. And it would cost additional millions, he said, to build downtown parking space to handle additional automo biles. Gunlock used the CTA survey as an argument for allotment of highway funds to rapid transit facilities. The transit authority is seeking a subsidy to expand rapid transit facilities and make them safe.
