On walk ing, they feel more tired than when they went to bed. As a woman says, "The best part of the day has gone before I can coordinate myself to do the necessary Household chores. About four o'clock in the after noon such a woman will wake up, and perhaps by 10 o'clock, she will be full of energy and will "want to go places." This story is so typical, and I have heard it so many hundreds of times that I immediately know what the trouble is. Whenever a patient says, "I'm terribly tired," my first question is, Are you tired at tne end oi a day or are you tired when you get up in the morning?" The normal person who works hard is tired at the end of each day. Often he perks up and feels all right after he eats his dinner The person whose fatigue is worse in the early morning prac tically always has inherited a tendency to moodiness and mel ancholy. Many of these persons are greatly helped by taking, when they wake, a tiny tablet of one of the stimulating drugs, such as Benzedrine or Dexedrine or De soxyn. The medicine should be left on the table beside the bed. I have a number of patients who are now working and earning a living who, before they took the morning stimulant, could not get going. Fund Started for Schrunk Defense Portland U.R) A group of Portland citizens have begun a drive to collect "at least $10,- 000" for the legal defense of Mayor Terry Schrunk. Schrunk was indicted last Thursday on two counts by the Multnomah county grand jury investigating vice and corrup tion in .Portland. The grand jury charged Schrunk with giving perjured testimony to a former grand jury and with accepting a gambler's bribe. The group composed of a cross section of the community called themselves "The Commit tee to Defend Our Mayor." A spokesman said the group "will establish a fund for the de fense of our mayor as an ex ample of future public office seekers that they can count on the electorate in time of crisis." Acting chairman of the group, Bill Scott, said the general pub lic is incensed at the thought that an honest citizen of limited means, elected to public office, faces the prospect of legal harass ment without any guaarntee of means to provide for his own de fense. Scott said members of his com mittee share his belief that the mayor was elected in good faith and should be entitled to the best legal defense without per sonal financial penalty. Spanish Government Arrests Communists Madrid (U.R) The Spanish government Saturday announc ed the arrest of 14 persons al leged to be "affiliated with the Communist party" and members of a propaganda distributing ring. An announcement by the of fice of the director- general of security said activities of the ring were "directed from outside Spain." The announcement said the 14 suspects were caught with "pro paganda apparatus" typewriters, mimeograph machines, paper and "various subversive mater ials." in their possession. The announcement did not id-1 entity those arrested or say when they were seized. Petition Urges End Of Rackets in Unions Portland (U.R) A petition signed by 625 Portland Team sters Union members was sent to Sen. John McClellan, chair man of the Senate Rackets In vestigating committee, last night urging the abolition of "all rack eteering in all unions." The signatures on the petition were collected by Larry T. Dav is, a Portland truck driver. He asked that other Teamsters who did not have anopportunity to sign the petition, write individ ual letters to the committee in support of its work. 3Mflii Consultant In Medlclnt, qjftsituf Professor of Medicine. hjvlj o r uuuuiiuua The drug skould not be taken is the afternoon because, then, it can interfere with the per son's sleep. The stimulating drug tends to cut down on appetite. Many will ask "But are these drugs safe?" There has been much research done to get an answer to this question, and so far as I can learn, most people can take , the drug for years without getting into trouble. I have heard of a few persons who ran the dose up and became habituated, but they did not have good sense. In my experi ence, sensible people do not get a habit with anything. The man who gets habituated to a drug is of the type who drinks too much alcohol, who drinks 20 cups of coffee a day, and smokes 3 packages of cigarettes. Give him a dozen tablets of sleeping medicine and he is likely to take half of them the first night. Texan May Face French Guillotine Fort De France, Martinique CU.R) Miguel E.
