Holmer Is Named
Elections Supervisor
Salem (U.Pi Secretary of
State Mark Hatfield Friday an
nounced the appointment of
Freeman Holmer at supervisor
of elections to succeed Dave
O'Hara, who retires July 1 at the
age of 70 after 42 years of state
service.
Hatfield said Holmer's ap
pointment would be effective ui
April "to provide ample oppor
tunity for Mr. O'Hara to impart
his vast knowledge of the divi
sion to his successor."
Holmer, 39, is a graduate of
Concordia college and the Uni
versity of Oregon. He is married,
father of two boys and is a
World War II veteran of 48
months Army service. He has
been with the Department of Fi
nance and Administration and
methods- section of the depart
ment. He also has served as a
member of the political science
stafl at Willamette university.

Dies of Gunshot Wound
Klamath Falls -UP) Vernon
Lugo, 17, of Sprague River,
Ore., died early Friday from i
gunshot wound incurred while
playing what police described as
"Russian roulette.
State Police Officer Larry
Bergman said young Lugo was
twirling the cylinder of a revol
ver while riding in the back seat
of a car at the outskirts of Klam
ath Falls. His companions said
he placed the muzzle of the
weapon to his left temple, said
"Aw, it ain't loaded," and then
pulled the trigger.
He was pronounced dead on
arrival at a hospital.
Four Children Die When
Fire Destroys Cabin
Cranbrook, B.C. (U.RS Four
children died Thursday night in
a fire which destroyed a cabin
orJ)the outskirts of this Koote
nay Valley center.
The victims, ranging in age
from 18 months to 6 years, were
the children of Mr. and Mrs.
Philip Cassimer of the St. Mary's
- Indian Reservation.
It was believed the blaze was
, caused by a stove which served
fro the cabin's heating unit.
Barthquake Reported

Jiouse-rocking earthquake
rumbled through a section of
this city Friday.
Dishes rattled, pictures
bounced off walls, chairs moved
and houses swayed. Robert Dole,
Cape Elizabeth, Maine, a retired
meteorologist, said it was "with
out doubt a small, localized
earthquake."
No serious damage was reported.
