Something not generally known is that in New York City more than 540,000 families live in private homes. That is more than any other city in the country. Chicago is second in that respect. Los Angeles is third. .4 New Yorker, who has agreed to he the best man at a pal's wedding, expresses himself as somewhat nervous as to the as- siygment and very vague as to what is expected of him. That is not unusual. Many fellows in a similar position feel likewise. There should be a course of in struction available as to the dut ies of a best man. He has been described as a kind of "master of ceremonies." Anyway, his duties are varied and many. They are detailed in all the best books on etiquette. The question most frequently asked me by those scheduled for best men as signments is to suggest a toast to the bride and bridegroom. I Qo not think the best man is ex peeted to make such a toast. My understanding is that the bride groom offers a toast to the bridesmaids. And the best man replies to that toast. Horiti and Women The so-called. "hour glass" fig ure is due for a revival. So I note it said. Very interesting. To possess an "hour glass" figure a 21-inch waist measurement is necessary. Anna Held and Lil lian Rusell did much to popular ize this figure. Records Too many long playing phono graph record'ngs are too long. When too much is put on one disc, the tone is affected. For tone and all around excellence the best record I have recently listened to is that of "My Fair Lady" with the original cast do ing the singing. We play it at least once each evening. Woman Likes TV; Owns Nine Sets Memphis, Tenn. (U.R) Mrs. F. M. Cooper owns nine tele vision sets. "I just like television," she ex plained. But the real reason behind all those sets is Mrs. Cooper's phobia about fiddling with TV dials. If Mrs. Cooper wants to watch another channel, she moves to another room instead of switch ing the dial. She has one set in each of the three bedrooms of her home, one in the .living room, one in the den, one in the breakfast room and one that can be moved any where in the house. UR) Two 19-year-old freshmen hope to kick two soccer balls from Princton university to New York City and back within 60 hours in a stunt to raise $1,000 for a Negro Episcopal mission in Gal veston, Tex. The freshmen, Robert L. Men denhall of Manasquan, N. J., and Victor, M. Regan Jr., of Hemp stead, N. Y., said they will start their 100 -mile "dribblethon" May 3. They scheduled a round trip test run from Princeton to Trenton, N. J. for Saturday. The money will go to St. Vin cent's mission in Galveston. The Negro mission has a white pastor, the Rev. Fred Sutton. Ingrid Bergman, Yul BrynnerWin Highest Acting Awards in World By ALINE MOSBY United Press Correspondent Hollywood (U.R) Ingrid Bergman, a self-made exile from the United States because of flaming headlines seven years ago, won world's highest acting honor, the Oscar, Wednesday night as the best actress of 1956. Yul Brynner, the bedroom eyed matinee idol as bald as the Oscar he clasped, smilingly ac cepted the 29th annual Academy Award as best actor for playing the arrogant, child-like ruler of Siam in "The King and I." Veteran Anthony Quinn, who portrayed artist Paul Gaugin in "Lust for Life," was cited as best supporting actor in a sur- Bill Would Excuse Guard Students Called To Duty in Emergency Salem (U.R) When a high school student who is a member of the National Guard is called out for disaster relief, he should n't be charged with an unexcus ed absence, in the opinion of Sen. Dwight Hopkins, Imbler Democrat. And the senator who represents Union, Baker and Wallowa coun ties said Wednesday he hoped that legislation he has introduc ed will remedy the situation. Unexcused Absence Sen. Hopkins said that high school students in the National Guard who recently were called out to help fight flood conditions in Baker and Malheur counties found when they returned to school that they had been charg ed with unexcused absences. Hop kins introduced Senate bill 41, now being studied by the Senate Education Committee. "The law if passed," Hopkins said, "would allow any student. if called in an emergency as a member of the National Guard, armed forces reserve, ground ob server corps, or civil defense, by the president of the United States, or the governor of the state, to be excused from school during the period of mobilization."
