Snow clogged air vents caused carbon monoxide gas to accumu late giving the passengers headaches, chills and nausea. They were stranded for ajnost 48 hours before rescue. Navy to Oppose Plans To Move Ammunition Depot in California By GEORGE COFFEY United Press Correspondent Washington (UP) The Navy will oppose efforts to re locate its Port Chicago. Calif., ammunition depot because there are "practical advantages" to leaving it where it is. This was disclosed Wednes day in a letter written by Navy Undersecretary Thomas S. Gates Jr., to the Houee Armed Services committee. The letter accomp anied the report of a private en gineering firm on a year-long study on the. possibility of mov ing the installation. TTe report was by the Ar thur D. Little Company of Cam bridge, Mass. It named four al ternate sites as "feasible for de velopment." and suggested two plans for expanding the Port Chicago location. Gates said the Navy is oppos ed to any of the prosposals ex O cept one whereby the Navy would acquire a two-mile "safe ty zone" around the installa tion, and would be allowed to buy the towns of Port Chicago and Nicholas, along with parts of Shore Acres and Clyde. Costs Leu Money The latter plan. Gates said, "possesses the practical advan tages not found in the others." Under it, he added, inhabitants would be removed from the danger area "in a minimum of time." Gates said other advantages of the proposal are that it would cost "one fourth to three fourths the money of any other plan, provide minimum operational jind maintenance costs and pro- ) vide the best berthing facilities for nine ammunition ships dur ing in-port periods." Unlike the Little company's other proposal for expanding the present site, the Navy endorsed plan specifies that the two chemical plants at Nicholas, and the nearby General and West ern States plant would not be acquired "at this time." "All residents in the danger area could be removed without acquisition of the chemical plants," Gates said. "Only a to tal of about 150 persons now em ployed at the plants would be exposed in the danger area dur ing their working hours. Senate To Talc Look A senator and a representative criticized the Navy proposal. Sen. Henry M. Jackson CD Wash.), member of a Senate Armed Services subcommittee, said he plans to have his com mittee "look into the matter." "The Navy's desire to keep Port Chicago where it is doesn't jibe with the facts," he said. "It is established that the area is entirely too overcrowded, and the only solution is to move the depot elsewhere." Rep. John F. Baldwin (R Calif .), in whose district Port Chicago lies, said "in effect this is basically the same recommen dation the Navy made last year, which the Congress did not ap prove." The plan would require 3.500 people to be moved out of their homes, he said. "I question the desirability of any proposal which would make this necessary in peacetime," he said. Ingrid Learns of Award Early Today Paris (U.R) Ingrid Berg man took sleeping pills before she went to bed Wednesday night and slept right through the Hollywood Oscar awards but said this morning she was "thrill ed to death." Ingrid said she was determin ed she would not worry herself sick with suspense and went to bed with sleeping pills and strict orders at her hotel not to be disturbed. It was not until 6:30 a.m. that a studio agent was able to reach her on the telephone and inform her she had won the Oscar for her performance in "Anastasia." "Then the children bounced into the room," she told the United Press in an interview. "I told them I had won it and Ve suvius erupted. "Then they brought flowers to me in bed. "I'm grateful to my director, Anatole Litvak. Without him I would not have gotten the Oscar." Police Say Safety Campaign Pays Off Bend ;U.R Law enforcement authorities in central Oregon said today they believed a safety campaign to cut eaths on Ore gon's 'Dcath Alley" may be get ting results. A 16-mile stretch of rock rimmed pavement on Highway 97 between Bend and Redmond has claimed 35 lives since it was built 20 years ago. It is known as one of the fastest sections of highway in the state. State police have placed the stretch under heavy patrol and a skeleton-draped billboard at one end of the section warns of the peril ahead. So far, there have been no deaths on the stretch this year. Neighbors in adjoining yards Zoologist Defends Stinging Critters Los Angeles JU.R) Zoologist Raymond Cowles has taken up th cfefense of such critters as fltert scorpions, black widow Jpidcrs. trap-door spiders and ifrtntult. Cowles said their bites may be painful but are not gravely dan gerous to adult human beings, except in cases of special al lerji. The sting of the large desert scorpion may be less se vere to some persons than that of a bee. Cowles added. He pointed out that the sting of the Durango scorpion, found in southern Arizona and south into Mexico, has caused numer ous deaths. The bite of the black widow, while excruciatingly painful, is seldom fatal, Cowles noted, and the fearsome looking tarantula is probably the most over-rated villain of all. It cannot inflict serious wounds nor is it agres sive. Dr. Cowles said a tarantula makes a fine pet and lives hap-, pily in captivity. bees stung the weakened animal into a coma. Fred Danker, a nearby motel keeper who knew about bees, finally came to the rescue. He took a small wooden keg and placed it near the limp form of the dog. Most of the bees swarmed onto the keg. "When the bees were on Max, they looked like pebbles on a brach, but moving pebbles," one witness said. Max was rushed to an animal clinic as soon as the bees flew away. Mf. Shasta Man Gets Results From Ad Mt. Shasta, Calif. !U.RX Wal ter W. Cook of Mt. Shasta has a new twist for an old motto. He says "if you can't give it away, sell it." Cook owns a monstrous pile of sawdust 15 feet deep and cov ering several acres. It is about 68 years old and cured just right for fertilizer. But when he ad vertised for people to come and haul it away free for the taking he had no customers. Then Cook advertised the stuff for sale at 25 cents a sack. Busi ness is so brisk he's netting S50 a day and he estimates his saw dust pile will yield 200 bags a day for the next five years. The Columbia river, the boundary between Washington and Oregon, is believed to carry more water than all other Amer ican streams located in the Pacif ic coast region combined.
