Minor Accident Dale Larry DePeel, 19. of 308 Ashland it.. Medford, was driver of a ve- j hide involved in a minor acci dent at 9:50 p.m. Thursday at North Phoenix and Fern Valley rds., according to state police. .Officers said DePeel was travel ing south on North Phoenix rd., and failed to negotiate a right turn onto Fern Valley rd. His vehicle went over a bank and minor damage resulted to the front end of the car. There were no injuries. Obituaries ' Hornbrook Mrs. Mary Ellen Gardner, 88, of Copco, died Tues day evening, March 19, at Siski ; you County hospital in Yreka. I She had been a patient at the j hospital since March 1, when she i suffered minor injuries in a car ! accident on the Hornbrook ! Copco road. Mrs. Gardner was a pioneer resident of the southern Oregon- northern California area. She I was boyi in Ashland Jan. 18, 1869. On April 6. 1890, in Keno, Oregon, she was married to James M. Gardner. The family moved to Yreka in 1917, and Mr. Gardner died two years later. Since 1926. Mrs. Gardner had made her home at Copco with her son, Tom She had been a member of the Methodist church in Yreka for more than 40 years. Besides her son Tom, she is survived by another son, Fred Gardner, of Menlo Park, Calif.; four daughtfrs. Mrs. Amy Ling of Yreka, Mrs. Frances Moore of Ashland, Mrs. Ann Moore of Grants Pass, and Mrs. Ella Judd of Yuba City, two sisters, Mrs. Jennie Hum of Klamath Falls, and Mrs. Edith Anderson of Syracuse. N Y., a brother Thomas Grubb of Klamath Falls and 21 grandchildren and 25 great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 23, in Gardner's Funeral Chapel in Yreka. Tom Wray Reelected Budget Chairman The Jackson county budget committee reelected Tom Wray chairman and Roger Rath secre tary this morning at the group's first meeting on the 1957-58 county budget. The six-member committee spent the remainder of the morn ing going over total budget re quests presented by heads of the various county departments. Totals of the budget requests are being compared with total appropriations in the 1956-57 budget. Turn in to KBES-TV Fridays, 6:00 p.m. Name Sought for New Reserve Armory The proposed military reserve center on the present Jackson County Housing Authority site, McAndrews rd. and Jackson st., will be named after a local citi zen who served in the Army in an "outstanding manner," Col. William H. Prentice, com mander of the local Army re serve unit, said today. A committee composed of Prentice and officials from local Army reserve units are now ac cepting names from valley resi dents. Persons should not enter names without complete infor mation about the entrant's back ground. Prentice said. Local citizens with recom mendations for an appropriate name for the reserve training center should submit informa tion to Prentice at the federal building, 33 North Riverside ave., Medford. Negotiations are now in prog ress between the Army and the housing authority for the build ing site. Chains Not Needed On Mountain Passes Traffic was moving without chains over the Siskiyous and Green Springs, state police re ported this morning. Two inches of new snow was reported on the Siskiyous and three inches fell on the Green Springs, they said. Crater Lake National park re ported 4 'i inches of new snow in the past -24 hours, bringing the total on the ground to 129 inches. Highway 62 through the park was open, and motorists were advised to use chains, were required from Annie Springs to the rim. It was snow ing lightly at the lake this morn ing, rangers reported. 'Missing' Portland Man Will Testily Los Armeies U.R) John W. Vance, a recent witness before the Senate Rackets committee, said today he would return to testify before the Multnomah county grand jury "whenever they want me.' Vance's absence from his hotel room in Portland where clothing had ben left behind had created specuration that something might have happened to him. He said he had returned here, where his father lives, because he is ill. Portland Barbers May Get $1.75 for Haircuts Portland (U.R) There were indications today that the price of a haircut in Portland barber shops may jump to $1.75 on July 1. A spokesman for the local barbers union said that the union has taken no action on a pro posed hike in prices but that there has been talk about seeking a 25-cent increase when the present contract expires on July 1. Airplane Wreckage Found in Columbia Cascade Locks iU.R) Wreck age of the twin-engined Beech craft plane which crashed into the Columbia river Wednesday night was recovered by search ers late yesterday but the body of Pilot Lou C. Herron, 36, of The Dalles, was not inside. The plane was found about 300 feet offshore from the spot where it first struck the Colum bia river highway and then ca reened into the river during a flight from Portland to The Dalles. Searchers have found only fragments of ' what may have been a human body. Holmes Withdrawing Port Appointment Salem U.R) Gov. Robert D. Holmes said today he was with drawing the appointment of, Francis A. Staten, Portland, in dustrialist, to a post as Port of Portland commissioner because it had been called to his atten tion that Staten was ineligible because of residence. The governor explained thai though Staten is manager of the Acme Sheet Metal Works in Portland, within the jurisdiction of the port, his residence is at Oswego just outside the bound aries of the port. Grants Pass Men Plead Guilty To Tree Theft Portland IU.R) Pleas of guilty to theft of 100 fir trees from a national forest were en tered in Federal Court here yes terday by two Grants Pass men David S. Chambers, 26, and Dan L. Riegel, 28, pleaded guilty to the charge that they took the trees from the Siskiyou national forest and sold them in Los An geles as Christmas trees. These are results of a project started in cooperation with the Medford' High school English and drama instructor, who has been seriously ill for several months, under going a series of operations.
