Baker Man Killed In One-Car Accident Baker (U.R) A Baker man was killed instantly yesterday in a one-car crash on Highway 30 four miles west of here. Killed was Ted Moffitt whose car failed to negotiate a left turn and crashed into a tree on the right side of the highway. Medford Man Arrested After Car Accident Harry Clair Hewitt, 62, of 2347 Howard st., Medford, was arrested by state police Saturday night and lodged in the county jail on a charge of driving while under the influence of intoxi cating liquor after his car was involved in an accident on High way 99 in north Medford. According to police, Hewitt's car was traveling north on the highway and made a left turn into the path of a vehicle oper ated by Deane G. Roberts, 33, of 345 West Pine St., Central Point. The vehicles collided and Roberts and his wife both suf fered lacerations. They were treated at Rogue Valley hospital Monday, March 18, 1957 MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE ELEVEN Committee Argues Civil Rights Bill Washington (U.R) South erners prepared today to wage a last ditch fight in the House Judiciary Committee to further water down President Eisen hower's Civil Rights bill. The committee resumed closed door consideration of the bill with a "firm agreement" among backers and opponents to com plete action before the day ends. Southern members, who have and released that evening, police said. Hewitt was not reported injured. ' complained of northern absen teeism during hearings on the measure, hinted they might challenge any proxy votes cast for missing members today. The. Dixie congressmen feel full attendance of the 32 mem ber committee improves chances ot getting their amendments ap proved. They noted that their victories have been scored when most members were present. New York has the oldest un broken state forest administra tion in the U.S. It was founded in about 1885. Hotel-Motel Planned in Portland by Sheraton New York (U.R) Sheraton Corp. of America announced to day plans for the construction of "highway hotels" in Portland, Ore., and Binghamton, N.Y. The Portland hotel will have 300 rooms and will cost $4 mil lion. The company said the eight-story structure will be a combination hotel and motel. Although household washing machines have been in use for many years, they did not come into general use until after World War I. Group Schedules Pay for Stale GOP Education Program Chairman Planned The board of directors of southern Oregon Operation Home Improvement met last week to lay final plans for a 13 week educational program to start about April 1. Stewart Orr, manager of 3 C's Lumber company of Grants Pass and president of the OHI board, announced that 81 firms, manufacturers and suppliers of home equipment and building materials Ashland, Grants Pass and Medford are participat ing. Also participating are utili ties, labor unions, lending in itutions, mills and lumber companies. Officers of southern Oregon Operation Home Improvement, Stewart Orr, president; Bert Thierolf, vice president; Allen Perry, treasurer; and Jennings Fierce, secretary, have signed articles of incorporation, creat ing southern Oregon Operation Home Improvement as a non profit corporation. Other members of the OHI board of directors include Bob Neilson, Grants Pass; Norton Smith, Medford: Allen Monroe, Ashland: Ted Paulus, Grants Grants Pass; and Jack Raapke, Medford. Next meeting of the board will be Wednesday night at the Elks club in Grants Pass. Salem (U.R) A leader in Re publican state politics has sug gested that the Republican State Central Committee look ino the possibilities of making its chair manship a salaried position. In a letter, mailed over the week end to county chairman and other GOP officials, Al Loucks, former Salem mayor, made the proposal. He said ini tial reaction to the suggestion had been both favorable and unfavorable. The state GOP central com mittee is slated to meet in Port land March 30 to name a new chairman to succeed Wendell Wyatt. who has announced his resignation. Several names have been men tioned as possible candidates for the party post. Among those are James Short, retiring state director of agriculture: George Stadclman of The Dalles; Rob ert White, former Salem mayor John Merrifield, former state senator from Portland, and Francis Smith, Multnomah county Republican chairman. Lloyd Evans Gets General Agent Post Lloyd W. Evans, prominent in Medford life insurance circles for the past nine years, was named general agent in Spokane, Wash, last week for the Lincoln National Life Insurance com pany. Fort Wayne. Ind., accord ing to Cecil F. Cross, vice presi dent and director of agencies. Encaged in life insurance sales for (ke last nine years in Med ford, OEvans has been his com pany's assistant agency manager for the southern part of Ore gon for the last five years. Active in civic fairs. he has been president of the Junior Chamber of Commerce, and treasurer and president of the Lions International.
