What we must remember, if all this conflicting news is to make any sense to us at all, is that this Middle East problem is still in the NEGOTIATING stage. Both sides are trying to una out wnere they are. Each is seeking all the advantages it can get. From time to time, both sides run bluffs in an effort to find out how far it is safe to go in' a certain direction. Each side wants to know how much the other side will stand for. ALL this is a normal and nat ural nart nf the nmroxs if negotiation. ; As to what will come of it all, we can only wait and see. Everyone here is against me. Arthur J. When I was in the Army overseas three years ago, I married a European girl. We were very much in love and at that time we couldn't see that anything could be an obstacle to our being happy together, al though both our families warned us that differences in our back ground could make trouble for us. o MONDAY MORNING 11 3 i -nsc 2? She doesn't like my friends or the way we live. A hundred times a day she says, "Oh, we do things better over there." Kow we have a year-old baby and Betty wants to go back home. I just couldn't live any where but here and I want my son to be an American. 1 cer tainly don't want a divorce. It would mean I d never even see my child. But I can't go on with this constant nagging and cnti cism. Betty J. Before we were married Arthur had lots of criti cism, of American life and warn ed me I wouldn't like this and that thing about it. So it turned out but now if I say anything. he bursts into a fit of temper and is ready to turn me in for being a traitor or a spy or some thing. As a matter of fact, on the whole, I think America is won derful, but it happens that we could live much better in my country. My father has a fine business there and would take Arthur in. We could be well off there, whereas here we just make ends meet. There are other factors too I miss my family terribly. Ar thur s tamily has treated me very coolly. They were against our marriage and take his atti tude that I am anti-American if I ever say a word that is criti cal or mention something I loved back home. It makes me so lone some to feel that everyone here is against me. 1 ; INI e l U B M I I I I A V II 13 I II TTERE'S one for the book: Testifying before a house ag riculture subcommittee in Wash ington, Cecil Collerette of Casa ( Grande, Ariz., representing the growers of Arizona extra-long staple cotton, asked for a law to ; I keep supports for this type of cotton DOWN TO 75 PER CENT , OF PARITY. He explained that if congress doesn't act to pre-1 vent it, supports for extra-long staple cotton may be pushed up to 90 per cent of parity this year 1 under the flexible support pro gram. Arthur evidently gave his bride very poor prepa ration for life in the United States. His criticisms made be fore they were married must have frightened her out of her wits about life in a new coun try. He could so easily have got ten her to look forward to the many good things she would find here. It is very likely that Arthur had misgivings about his mar riage in the face of his family's objections and expressed this in his uneasy criticism of the life Betty would have. If Betty had been a little shrewder, she would have realized this and prepared herself to love every thing about her new country. But it is probable, too, that Betty had similar fears about marry ing against her family's warning and going so far from home. These two young persons are now parents themselves and want to hold their home togeth er. Betty should recognize that she agreed before marriage to go to live in her husband's native country. She has no right to back out of the agreement or to make her husband's and child's life miserable by remain ing here grudgingly. Fortunately anybody can find enoueh priori thinpc ahont Ameri can life to love it if he or she chooses to. Betty should realize that everyone here cannot pos- j sibly be "'against her since everyone here traces back to a foreign origin and no country is more open to variety in thoughts and ways of living. Both Arthur and Betty should take a fresh look at American life and perhaps Betty's lone liness can be appeased by an oc casional trip home. (Copyright 1957. General, Features Corp.)
