MEDFORD By tugtno lunii Ranger-Naturalist Of nocess-.ty, equipment car ri"d Into the outdoors must be l.it", compact, and servicable Because most of these articles have been built for home-use and are often based upon in herited tradition, many do not fit the outdoorsman'g bill at all Now to invent something for the outdoors, one need not be a genius: much more, it's the person's imagination which counts sizing up the need and then meeting it with a practical solution. So. while my judges are climbing out of the many suggested most-wanted-outdoor-inventions provoked by my Feb ruary contest offer, here's an other helping culled in part from Raymond F. Yates' 3100 Needed Inventions (Wilfred Funk. N.Y.). A pocketbknife which can be opened more easily without dan ger of breaking the fingernails. An ax blade cover most ac cidents in the woods are caused by axes. An improved non-sinkable lifeboat. A sailboat that cannot capsize. Arid finally, a better method of attaching outboard motors to boats each year, hundreds of motors are lost from boats due to capsizing. J A wind, rain, and mosquito-j proof tent which can be put up Msily and weighs less than to day's tents. I Being a camp cook usually ! by preference I'd like a de- vice to focus the heat of the j cnpfire upon the material to be cooked not upon the bull ; cook's red face. I I've often wished I could can j and preserve for home use the i wonderful early-morning aroma of coffee boiling, eggs sputter ing in butter; bacon frying; and the smell of pines and fresh air. But I'd be willing to settle for the moment, for something that would keep the wonderful oven aroma 'of fresh bread, or any other bakery" products for that matter. Say, capture and hold it for 48 hours. Sure, there are plenty of small radios on the market but what about one which can be included within a camera with out increasing the weight ap preciably. Or one within field glasses. You've had the distasteful task of picking tinfoil out of gooey, melted chocolate bars. Certainly there must be some way of raising the melting point Qf chocolate. It would mean a great deal to the chocolate-candy industry too. At present in many ' parts of this country, the pro duction of chocolate goods is airman, completely halted dur ing summer months. (Which re minds me: During World War j II, the army added something to butter I believe paraffin so it wouldn't melt in the tropics. You're right, by mistake a ship ment went up to the Aleutians. We had to use axes to cut into It.) An onion peeler to prevent smarting, tear-flooded eyes. A simple Pasy-to-clean egg beater. A better case in which to pack eggs into the woods for ship ping anywhere, for that matter. Indicator for Gunt A lighter rifle but still accur ate. A shotgun that will not kick. A visible indicator for guns and revolvers that will give conspicuous warning when they are loaded. A simple gauge that will give the hunter the speed of the crosswind to help him shoot more accurately. A better method for preserv ing meat fish, fowl and game in the woods. A dry fly that will Jteep afloat; a wet fly that will sink when new. A strong knotless tapered leader with a heavy butt which will sink while the line floats. For that first off-the-beaten road fishing trip and that late-ln-the-fall deer hunting trip, a muahook for easy and quick ap plication around a tire which will fit the modern disk-type wheel. O Some way of treating knots in knotty pine so they will never drop out. And finally, some safety-proof cigarettes and matches which will quickly extinguish when discarded to reduce the hazard of forest fires.
