The increase was 73,500 over November and 324,300 over De cember a year ago. The monthly gain was due al most entirely to the hiring of Christmas extras in retail stores and post offices. California employment jump ed to 4,544,000 in December, up 75,000 from November. In Ore gon, continued declines in lum ber were mainly responsible for a net drop of 5,400 to a total of 488,100.
