Salary Employment Sets December Mark
San Francisco (U.R) Wage
and salary employment, exclud
ing domestic and agricultural
workers, in the three Pacific
Coast states reached 5,826,400
during December to establish a
record high which exceeded that
of September 1956.
The increase was 73,500 over
November and 324,300 over De
cember a year ago.
The monthly gain was due al
most entirely to the hiring of
Christmas extras in retail stores
and post offices.
California employment jump
ed to 4,544,000 in December, up
75,000 from November. In Ore
gon, continued declines in lum
ber were mainly responsible for
a net drop of 5,400 to a total of
488,100. Washington, at 794,200,
showed a net gain of 3,800 from
November and nearly 40,000
over the past year.
