Wednesday, February 6, 1957 Around Hollywood Hollywood (U.R) How to combat the movie star shortage and also beat the dwindling - United States J '"SI- d mnvip K n s i. ness: Hire a foreign film favorite. G e rmany's O. W. Fischer is the latest box - office sucess of Eur ope to be im- Aline Mosby purieu i u i a Hollywood picture by Universal International studio. Last year U-I signed Rossano Brazzi for a film. Mike Todd outdid all the pro ducers by using an international cast in "Around the World in 80 Days" to insure its boxoffice success the world around. Foreign imports have a double advantage for Hollywood. For one thing, top stars are as scarce in Hollywood because so few new luminaries have hit the top. Only a handful of graying actors and actresses control the top jobs. Good scripts go beg ging for lack of stars to play them. Foreign Patrons Important Furthermore, 55 per cent of a Hollywood film's revenue comes from outside the United States. The patrons of theaters in Tokyo, Rome, Berlin and Glas gow are as important or more so to movie producers than American, fans. Fischer, No. 1 at the boxoffice in his country, was lured to Hollywood by a remake of the William Powell-Carole Lombard sucess of 21 years ago, "My Man Godfrey." The V i e n n a-born actor plays a penniless Aust rian count hired as a butler by the pert June Allyson. Blond, handsome Fischer ar rived in Hollywood last week for his first visit to the United States, leaving his wife and five cats at home. Good Script Attracts Actor "The studio asked me to come Merchant Seamen on Trial for Assault San Rafael, Calif. (U.R) Two Southern California merchant seamen went on trial here Tues day on charges of assaulting longshore leader Harry Bridges in a Sausalito restaurant last Sept. 21. j The defendants were Fred Reppine, 35, and Donald C. Han sen, 28, both members of the Sailors Union of the Pacific a bitter rival of Bridges' Inter national Longshoremen s and Warehousemen's Union. District Attorney Willaim O. Weissich said Bridges would not be called as a witness, but his testimony given at a prelim inary hearing would be read into the trial record. Nixon Asked To Attend Gold Coast Celebration Washington (U.R) The White House has announced that President Eisenhower has asked Vice President Richard M. Nix on to represent the United States at ceremonies in March cele brating the independence of the Gold Coast in Africa.
