o o o Q 3 Siale Democratic Much Paperwork Required Central Committee ITo Qualify for Social Security To Meet Feb. 9, 10 Portland Gov. Robert Holmes and the chairmen of both Houses pi the Oregon Leg islature will speak at the first 1957 gieeting of the Democratic State Central Committee in Coos Bay this week end. Oregon Democratic leaders, including Legislators and other State officials, will attend the two-day meeting Feb. 9 at the Hotel Tioga. Chairman Robert A. Boyer of Medford announced that the principal business before the central committee will be a workshop Sunday morning at which members will study pos sible changes in Oregon elec tion laws. Purpose of the work shop. Boyer stated, is to fam iliarize party leaders in the 36 rounties with the report of the Legislative Interim Committee on Elections and to formulate Democratic party policy in sup port of sound, workable election legislation. . Governor Holmes will be the main speaker at a dinner Sun day afternoon at the conclusion of the workshop. Speakers during the morning session will include the Pres-1 ident of the State Senate, Boyd Overhulse, and the Speaker of , the House . of Representatives, Patrick E. Dooley. They will report on the first three weeks of the Legislative Session in their respective houses. At torney Genearl Robert Y. Thorn ton and State Labor Commis sioner Norman Nilsen have also been invited to attend the meet ing. Events scheduled for Saturday include a reception for central committee members and Leg islators to be given by the Dem ocrats of Coos county, and a Washington IU.R! Making out your income tax return is child's play compared with the rigamarole of government paper work you'll have to go through when you qualify for Social Se curity benefits. Retirement age may seem a long way off. But you can save yourself a lot of time and trouble later if you start now to collect some of the 'documents you'll need to establish your eligibility for a pension. Even if you have birth certi ficates, marriage licenses and other "proofs," it will take an average of about two months to process your papers. You'll wait another two to six weeks before your first check arrives. Longer delays are not uncom mon, particularly for those who have to rely on such "secondary documents" as a family bible or the sworn statements of old friends to prove their age. Law Requires Paperwork The complicated paperwork and follow - up investigation which slow processing of retire ment benefits are no mere bu reaucratic whim. Most of this is required by the intricate pro visions of the Social Security Law, or as a safeguard against fraud. Here's what you'll have to go through when you reach retire ment day, and a few tips on shortcuts: On R-day minus 60 two months before your 65th birth day if you're a man, or your 62nd birthday if you're a wom an visit your district Social Security office. Your local Post Office can give the address of the one serving your area. Don't bother going sooner: The Social Security folks won't start processing your forms until 60 days before you're eligible, no matter how much earlier you apply. If the district Social Security office is some distance from your home, write and ask when a field representative will be in your town. Be prepared for your first in terview by gathering together the best proofs of (1) your age: (2) your marriage, if you intend to claim an extra payment for buffet dinner. Local groups will have an opportunity to talk with members of the Legislature Sat urday afternoon. Youths Recommended For Academy Tests Two Medford youths have been recommended by Rep. Charles O. Porter to compete for appointments to the United State Air Force academy, ac cording to dispatches from Washington, D.C. . They are David L. Espey, son of Mr. and Mrs. Laurance V. Espey, 619 Park st., a senior at St. Mary's High school; and Ken Kumasawa, a senior at Medford High school who lives with his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Kisoo Nagayama, 220 Cottage st. They will compete with about 50 other Oregon youths for the state's three appointments to the academy class starting next July 1 at Colorado Springs, Colo. MONEY FOR FRANCE Mexico City U.R) The French government received a $1.60 indemnity today for the loss of three cats. The local 'Movement for the freedom of Algeria" sent the money as com pensation for the fatal stoning of the cats during a recent dem onstration by the group at the French embassy here. your wife or husband; (3) your first mate's death certificate or your divorce papers, if you're remarried; and (4) your discharge papers, if you served in the armed forces since Sept. 7, 1939. If you lack some or all of these papers, don't wait until you have them to visit the Social Se curity office. File your applica tion and send in the "proofs" later. It's the date of the appli cation itself, not the date on which the last supporting paper is received, that determines the priority in which your forms are processed. Personal Question Asked You can expect "to be asked some very personal questions, and some that will sound silly. For example: Were you married in a church or civil ceremony: Are you now living with your wife (or husband)? . If you're separated, are you contributing to your mate's sup port? Voluntarily or by court order? Did you work for a railroad at any time after 1936? This question is designed to find out whether you qualify under the Railroad Retirement Law rath er than Social Security. There will also be questions about how much part-time work you plan to do in retirement, what kind, and how much you expect to earn from it. The best way to speed up work on your application is to answer all questions fully and truthfully. Some or all of your claims will be investigated. If any indication is found that you're trying to pull a fast one on Uncle Sam, your file goes to the fraud division for a com plete investigation. In that case, it could be a year or more before your papers go through. Number of Jobless In Oregon Mounts 12,300 in January Salem (U.R) The number of unemployed workers in Ore gon increased 12,300 during Jan uary to reach 63,800, highest in three years according to the State Unemployment Compensa tion Commission. The total, which did not in clude a considerable number ex pecting an early call back to work with regular employers, was 12.600 more than a year ago but 9,600 below the seasonal top in early 1954. Increases Reported Additional layoffs in the west ern Oregon timber area were re sponsible for most of the new unemployment but Bend, Klam ath Falls, Hood River and some other eastern Oregon offices re ported heavy increases in recent weeks. Slightly more than one third of the unemployed were from the four-county Portland metro politan area, another third from south of Lebanon and Toledo in western Oregon, and "the rest from the upper Willamette val ley and east of the mountains. Payments to unemployed workers during January were close to $4,300,000, second high est month in the history of the commission.
