But al though it becomes greater in digmeter (over IT fact) it is not so tell ec eur northern species. Our Coest Redwoods are the tallest trees iff the world. Hie Founder's Trea, located in a grove at North Dyerville Flat, 130 miles swuth of Crescent City, until recently was the highest known. It is SS4 feet high. Now a couple of others have been social activities and counseling programs for married students. The traditional college program was developed in pre-war years when married students were a rarity, he says. Today, from 20 to 30 per cent of the men stu dents on most college campuses are marriedoand the college pro gram needs adjusting to meet the changed conditions, accord ing to the family life expert. There is an old California law that de mands the use of Redwood in wooden building foundations; Even the fibrous, fire-resistant bark, which gets to be a foot or more thick, has many uses, such as in felt making, insulations, soil mulch, etc. But the greatest benefit we get from the Redwoods is esthetic or spiritual, not material, and we can be thankful that many of the finest groves of these great trees are securely and permanently shielded for our everlasting en joyment from profit - blinded commercial interests. Indian Kama The generic name of the Red wood, Sequoia, is in honor of a famous Indian chief, Sequoyah, who invented an alphabet for the Cherokees. The specific name, sempervirens, means ever- living. A perfectly appropriate name for this species could very well be semperbellum, which means ever-beatuiful; for this is one tree that posses the rare vir tue of being symmetrical and beautiful from its seedling days to full-blown maturity this magnificent monarch of all the world's forests, the Redwood.
