Midwest, East in Grip of Winter's Coldest Weather; At Least 16 Dead By UNITED PRESS Winter'i coldest weather bit into the Midwest and East today in the calm, clear wake of the season's worst snow storm. The Arctic cold blast sent the mercury skidding to below zero readings over wide sections of the eastern third of the nation and to near freezing as far south as central Mississippi and Alabama. One of the coldest spots in the nation was Joliet, 111., with an overnight reading of 14 below It was minus 13 at Albany, N.Y., and Burlington, Vt.; 5 below at South Bend, Ind., and 2 below in Chicago. The cold wave followed a near blizzard that buried the Midwest and Atlantic seaboard with up to a foot of snow. Free Salk Vaccine Station Schedule Announced Plans have been completed for the mass free Salk polio vaccine inoculations in Jackson county, starting Monday. The tax-purchased vaccine will be administered to all persons und er 20 years of age at schools In the county and at the Jack ion County Health Department offices in the courthouse. The program is sponsored by the Jackson County Medical So ciety and the doctors are don ating their services. Consent slips have been sent home by school children and parents desiring to have their children vaccinated are asked to return the slips to the school at once if they haven't already done so. Parents of pre-school children may take them to the school nearest their home for the shots. A.M. to Noon Schedule Those who no longer are at tending school but are under 20 years of age may receive the vaccine at the school nearest their home or at the courthouse. It was stated. Vaccine stations at the schools will be open from 9 a.m. to noon each day while the court house station will be open for vaccinations Tuesdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Fridays from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Second shots will start on Feb. 11. The third, or "booster" shot, should be given about a year later and may be received Lithia Way Chosen For Ashland Street Ashland The Ashland city council this week named a two block section from Second to East Main st. Lithia way. The new council voted 4 to 2 in favor after considerable dis cussion of the relative merits of C street, Clarence lane, and Lithia way. Petitioners for the name Lithia way said they believed the name was not only ap propriate but commercially valu able in connection with Ashland. Montreal (U.P.) St. Lawrence Corp. hss announced a price in crease of $4 a ton on newsprint, effective March 1. from the family physician, und er present plans. A $10,000 cash grant of a type rarely seen in the music world has been, given to the Portland Junior Symphony orchestra by the Rockefeller Foundation of New York. The grant is to cover a three year period for the commission ing of new compositions suit able for youth orchestras. It is one of the few ever given by a major foundation to an orches tra society for a commissioning series. A nationwide committee of composers, critics, conductors and musicologists will join with the orchestra to select compos ers who will be offered com missions. The Portland junior sym phony is one of the few per manently organized orchestras for youth in the nation and is under the permanent conductor ship of Jacob Avshalomov. Colored Portland idges Suggested Portland !U.R) A proposal to paint Portland's Willamette riv er bridges in brilliant hues is getting serious consideration from the county roadmaster's office. The Portland Chamber of Commerce suggested that differ ent colors for each of the bridges would be a boon to confused tourists and would also brighten the drab downtown scenery. County Roadmaster Paul C. Northrop said the idea is a good one and said he may call for sug gestions on colors to be used, provided no one suggests polka dots or stripes.- HOSPITAL AT GRESHAM Gresham '(U.P.) Plans for a S600.000 hospital here to serve eastern Multnomah county were revealed here last night. In ad dition, four children suffocated from fumes of an over-heated oil stove in Nebraska. Most main roads in the storm area were reported open today, but slippery with packed ice. The storm moved out into the Atlantic Thursday night after pounding Norfolk, Va., and An napolis, Md.. with winds of more than 70 miles-per hour. New England was hit by 10 to 12 inches of snow and New York state got four to eight inches. High winds hampered visibility, causing traffic jams in many highly populated areas of the East. Further north, the worst snow fall in a decade buried Windsor, Ont., under a 31-inch blanket of Newman Elected to Local Union Post Dale Newman - was elected president of the Medford Musi cians union local 597 for 1957 at a recent meeting. Kenny Brew was reelected vice president, Barney Garrett, sergeant at arms; Herb Alford, delegate to the Central Labor council; and J. Vernon Marshall, secretary - treasurer and auto matic delegate. Marshall also was named busi ness agent. He has served the positions for 15 years. Ally Maple was appointed to serve on the 1957 executive board, and Robert H. Padgett was appointed subordinate mem ber. The two board members, along with regular officers, complete the 1957 executive board. The local union was organized in 1942 with 15 members. This year there are 113 active mem bers, Marshall said. white and high winds whipped the snow into three-foot drifts. Two persons died of over-exertion after shoveling snow. The storm forced schools to close in section of New York state, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois and Iowa. Weathermen estimated five billion tons of snow fell during the widespread storm. At McGrew, Neb., four chil dren suffocated In their smoke- filled home while their mother was gone to get water because the cold weather had frozen wa ter pipes.
