Midwest, East in Grip of Winter's Coldest Weather; At Least 16 Dead
By UNITED PRESS
Winter'i coldest weather bit
into the Midwest and East today
in the calm, clear wake of the
season's worst snow storm.
The Arctic cold blast sent the
mercury skidding to below zero
readings over wide sections of
the eastern third of the nation
and to near freezing as far south
as central Mississippi and Alabama.
One of the coldest spots in the
nation was Joliet, 111., with an
overnight reading of 14 below
It was minus 13 at Albany, N.Y.,
and Burlington, Vt.; 5 below at
South Bend, Ind., and 2 below
in Chicago.
The cold wave followed a near
blizzard that buried the Midwest
and Atlantic seaboard with up
to a foot of snow.
A United Press count showed
at least 16 deaths blamed on the
storm, most of them caused by
over - exertion while shoveling
snow.

idges Suggested
Portland !U.R) A proposal to
paint Portland's Willamette riv
er bridges in brilliant hues is
getting serious consideration
from the county roadmaster's
office.
The Portland Chamber of
Commerce suggested that differ
ent colors for each of the bridges
would be a boon to confused
tourists and would also brighten
the drab downtown scenery.
County Roadmaster Paul C.
Northrop said the idea is a good
one and said he may call for sug
gestions on colors to be used,
provided no one suggests polka
