(U.P) Radio an tennae on aircraft of only a dec ade ago were prominent masts and wires whopping around in the slip-stream. Not so today. The supersonic aircraft now being built cannot have such proturberances and operate at speeds much faster than sound. Antennae today are buried in side the plane, and to do this design job a whole new class of electronics engineers was born. ChanceVought Aircraft has expanded its testing facilities to keep pace with antenna develop ment for its aircraft and mis siles. A crew of 17 men work with various sizes of plane and missile models. When high speeds forced relo cation of radio antennae inside jets, the move introduced a lot of new problems. The best place for radio reception might not be available because structural members or other equipment had to be located at that spot under the metal skin. This re sulted in a sort of tug-of-war among various groups of design ers for the available space and many compromises had to be reached. Once the antenna location is tentatively decided on by use of miniature models, full - scale models are made and the elec tronics gear installed in it. Nowadays, with many an overweight person trying either to look better or to lengthen his (or her) 1 i f e, or to avoid a heart attack by low ering a high blood choles terol, the ques tion is "How to eat?" Often the question for the haras sed housewife ivarex with a fat child or a husband with a high blood pressure is, "How to cook?" Such a wife will love the . book on "Low Fat Cookery" (McGraw-Hill, New York), just published by Evelyn Stead and Gloria Warren. They are married to two physicians at Duke University Medical School. They have worked out recipes for many dishes, now so designed that their calorie con tent will be much lower than usual. For instance; they have made a cherry pie that contains only 8 grams of fat instead of the 93 grams usually found in this dessert. The authors say that in cooking, fat serves three purposes; first, it holds things together as in a salad dressing; second; it serves to separate things, as in pie crust where it is responsible for the flakiness, and, third, it serves to provide flavor as in the case of butter on baked potatoes. This low-fat cooking is said to be more difficult than ordi nary cooking, and the cost is about the same. The Stead fam ily have been eating these low fat foods now for a year and half, and the three children from eight to 12 years of age testify that the stuff tastes good and "goes to the spot." Science Is Always Advancing I am often amused when someone writes to "take the hide off of me" for gross ignorance. For instance, a while ago I wrote that I had been reading a lot of papers recently presented at a congress of hematolgists (spec ialists in abnormalities of the blood) and had noted the state ment of some of the experts that when a man with a slight tendency to bleeding marries a woman with a slight tendency to bleeding, some of their children are likely to have serious trouble, with a failure of their blood to clot properly. Mayo Foundation Soon I received a number of scathing letters from people who wondered why I didn't know that only males are bleed ers and women never are. They wondered why so ignorant a man was. writing a column. The only trouble ,with these letter writers was .that they didn't know of the recent work by geneticists and blood experts who have found so-called "car riers" of the defect, and have found slight recognizable changes in their blood. My correspondents did not know that a number of women bleeders are on record, and there does not seem to be any doubt about them. Actually, I just heard from a woman who says she is a typical bleeder, and has had the diagnosis con firmed by blood experts at a great university. Another thing that my correspondents did not know is that there are a number of similar diseases mark ed by terrible bleeding. One is called the Christmas disease. Only an expert now can tell which disease a particular per son has; and what is true for one of these diseases is not nec essarily true for another similar one. All of which does not mean that every so often I will not pull a Doner, l nave punea some bad ones in the past, and I will doubtless pull many more. I cannot always be omniscient! As I wrote recently, many people feel that they can dis count science and can throw it out of court because scientists are always admitting that they have made a mistake. Actually, in most cases it is not so much a mistake as the result of a growth of knowledge or an addi tion to the old knowledge. We scientists are constantly finding rare exceptions to old rules. But this is as it should be; we must keep learning and advancing.
