Dr. Leon A. Greenberg of Yale University's Center of Al cohol Studies revealed his ex periments have shown that two cups of coffee make a safer driv er out of man or a woman who is "high" on two or three drinks. But it isn't the truly drunken who run up highway accident totals over Christmas and New Year, but the "high" drivers. "Visual fusion is the brain function which takes the sepa rate images picked up by the two eyes and fuses them into one. That helps the brain to judge distances instantly and ac curately. In the drunk, Green berg pointed out, this fusion often doesn't take place at all, and the drunk sees double. In the average sober person, according to his laboratory measurements, fusion takes place in about five one-hund redth of a second after the two eyes have focused upon an ob ject. His measurements show that three drinks will lengthen the fusion time to one and one half seconds. In that time a car going at 50 miles an hour ad vances 100 feet. Fusion Time Cut "In our experiments we have found that after two cups of coffee, this fusion time for the three-drink person is cut down again to seven, eight, or nine hundredths of a second or al most normal," Greenberg said in an Interview. His experiments with alcohol and coffee are not yet far enough advanced for concrete measurements, but they now in dicate that coffee also helps side vision which has been nar rowed by the effects of alcohol. Gov. Foss Recalls Memorable Christmas Pierre. S. D. (U.R) Gov. Joe Foss of South Dakota the World War II Marine flying ace remembers as his most mem orable Christmas the one in 1942 at Noumea, New Caledonia. Foss, who was to win the Con gressional Medal of Honor for shooting down 26 Japanese planes the next spring and sum mer, was looking forward to another mess hall dinner that Christmas. And like millions of other soldiers, he wasn't looking forward to that with much pleasure. But, Foss recalled, the pros pects brightened when a French doctor on the island invited eight Marines to his home for Christmas dinner. It was mem orable because the doctor could not speak English, and none of the Marines could speak French. "I never have figured out what he was talking about dur ing dinner," Foss said. But the Marines found that hand motions could be expres sive. "It was a terrific 11-course dinner," Foss recalled. "They brought one course at a time. When I saw what the situation was, I cut down on my portions for each course to have room for them all." The affair, Foss said, was plan ned on the spur of the moment and it was "an unforgettable experience." Repaired Toys Will Be Shown Friday Medford firemen and Medford Lady Lions have extended an in vitation to residents of the com munity to attend their showing of repaired toys from 1 to 7 p.m. Friday at the Franklin warehouse. One of the most prolific mothers of the present is Mrs. Marie Cyr of Fort Kent, Me., who is now 35. She was married when 17 and has given birth to a child a year. Heredity Some experts on the subject continue to claim hay fever, asthma and baldness are ?ier erditary. Also that the sons of a couple are very likely to bear a strong resemblance in char acter and appearance to the brothers of the wife. I am for tunate in not suffering from any of the three afflictions ore mentioned. So. I cannot check on the claim. As to resembling my mother's brothers, there may be something to that. I have been said to resemble my yncle Al. O O Santa Schedules CP Visit Saturday Central Point Santa Claus will make a personal appearance at the annual Christmas party for Central Point children at 7 p.m. Saturday, Dec. ,22, at the American legion hall. Transportation for Santa Claus will be furnished by the Central Point fire department. The American legion has decorated the hall for the visit. A choral group will sing at the party. Gifts and candy will be given to children attending. The party is being sponsored this year by the Central Point Junior Chamber of Commerce, with the local Legion post co operating. Jaycee cochairmen are Chet Ayres and Don Squire. The com mittee includes John Smock, Eloy Sutton and Melvin Frick. Sinclair Weeks Gets Special Aide Washington (U.R) Harold B. Corwin, Commerce Depart ment deputy general counsel, to day was appointed special assis tant to Secretary of Commerce Sinclair Weeks. Corwin has been deputy gen eral counsel for Commerce since 1953. Prior to World War II, he was Grand Rapids, Mich., deputy city attorney. To fill Corwin's former post, Commerce appointed Allen Ov erton Jr., who has been special assistant to the deputy general counsel since 1955. Overton is from Parkersburg, W. Va. AN EASY TRIP Fishkill, N.Y. (U.R) Frank Osterc of nearby Osborne Hill bundled himself up for a hunt ing trip into the woods. He had oiled his rifle and tested it the night before.
