It may be suffering from fins which are beginning to split and fray, or from overfeeding, or overcrowding, or sudden change of temperature, or from torn scales and bruises gotten in fighting, or from disease. Or, the fish may be listless, without sprit. Or, it may lose its balance toppling to the side, or floating to the top or sink ing to the bottom of the tanK. Usually, this denotes indiges tion intestinal gas, or air-bladder trouble after a sudden chill. Whatever the trouble, remove your sick fish gently from tlie aquarium with a dip net and place it in the emergency jar whose water has been set aside for 24 hours and is of the same temperature of the tank water. Salt Treatment Best For most illnesses, the sail treatment is the best. Salt is a good disinfectant and will kill most disease germs fish are sub ject to. For that matter, a salt bath once every two months or ty EUGENE BURNS Rjnger-Naruulist so. will help keep your fish in tip-top condition. And it isn t a bad practice to treat any new fish for a couple of days to this salt water bath before adding them to your aquarium. It's a good insurance. What's more, this rock-salt treatment is safe in the hands of an amateur fish doctor. But don't attempt to give the treat ment in an aquarium snails and plants will suffer. For this salt bath, you can use one part of sea water to five parts of 24-hour-old fresh water, at the right temperature, of course. If you cannot get ocean water, use rock salt which you can get at a petshop. Two teaspoonsful to the galon is ample. (Never use table salt to which harmful chemicals have been added to prevent caking. Nor perfumed drugstore salt. This too is harmful). Continue for 48 Hours Continue the salt-water treat ment for 48 hours; if that does not perk up your pet, repeat the treatment. Watch the tem perature keep it the same. Because overfeeding is at the root of most illnesses, feed your fish very little during the treat ment better yet, not at all for 48 hours if you think overfeed ing caused the trouble. Then, if after two 48-hour pe riods tlie fish doesn't respond, change his diet, especially if you can get angleworms, chopped up finely. That usually does it. Possibly, your illness may be due to too strong germicides in your city water. If you suspect this, sprinkle in new water which you have boiled and cool ed; or better yet, use water tak en from a clear pond or stream that has fish in it. At all times, handle your fish gently lift them with a dip net. Don't touch them witli dry hands, skin film and scales may adhere to pave the way for a fungus. Ground Rules Sought For Refugee Program Washington (U.R) The ad ministration is looking to Con gress for some ground rules to use in case new mass refugee programs are needed for Soviet satellites in the future. The administration wants to be better prepared to handle ref ugees rapidly should other sat ellite nations follow Hungary in trying to break away from Mos cow. A top Justice Department of ficial disclosed Friday the ad ministration will urge the new Congress to lay down ground rules for possible new mass ref ugee programs. He also formally announced that the administration will ask Congress to grant permanent U. S. citizenship to 15,000 Hun garian refugees now arriving in this country.
