(International Soundpholo) Oregon Income Tax Payments Compared With Other States Salem .U.R) State and local taxes for a family of four are lower in Oregon than in Wash ington incomes below $5,000 but hislier above S5.000. Taxes for this family of four are about the same in Oregon and California up to S9.000. but Oregon taxes are higher above this point. These comparisons were con tained in a report on the tax structures of Washington, Ore gon and California published by the Legislative Interim Tax Study committee. Largest Per Cent The publication pointed out that Oregon is collecting the largest per cent of personal in comes for state and local taxes, but that the difference among the three states is small less than one per cent. All three states are above the national average, however. Washington Is almost entirely dependent on sales and gross re ceipts taxes while Oregon is Some Picture This Would Make on TV! Tulsa. Okla. .U.R: Televi sion repairmen are, by habit, prepared for the worst when they take the back off a set. but Jamie Mcintosh is still flabber gasted with one set in particular. Inside the set (and Mcintosh has an inventory to prove it) were: Nineteen pencils, three toy drum sticks, three lollipop sticks, two slivers of bamboo, a safety pin, a hair curler, seven wood screws, two pieces of wall board, a four-inch castiron rod, an earring, insulated staple, four soda straws, two pearl beads, a button, a clock gear, a lipstick cap. a toothpaste cap, two rocks, a butterbean, 10 cigaret butts, six matches and one chicken bone. San Diego Navy Has Share of Pills ' When it comes to pills, the Navy in Sai Diego does its share. The pharmacy at the San Di ego Naval hospital claims to be the largest of its kind in the Navy. It lists some of its figures to back up its position. During the first six months of 1956 the pharmacy filled 155, 531 prescriptions; cough syrup is poured at the rate of 1,200 gal lons a year. The pharmacy compounds 65 per cent of the internal liquids it dispenses and makes 75 to 85 per cent of all ointments used. In practically all cases, the re port said, comparable personal income taxpayers pay substan tially higher incomes in Oregon than in California. Oregon and California taxpayers in high in come brackets also pay more in income taxes than Washington ians pay in sales taxes. Washington Higher Corporations pay about the same rates on net incomes in Oregon and California, but the Washington business and occu pation tax calls for larger pay ments from lowprofit firms than Oregon and California and lower payments from high-profit cor porations. Mich. U.R! Foresters at Michigan State Uni versity say .sprays make a bet ter Christmas door decoration than wreaths, mainly because thry are easier to make. They said the sprays require only a large, flat piece of green ery as a base but can be as at tractive as any wreath. One of the simplest sprays de pends on use of contrasting ev ergreens for its attractiveness, they added. The base is a large branch of white cedar. A slight ly smaller grouping of spruce or fir is then added. Sprays of white or Scotch pine are wired to the fir and then topped with cones and ribbons. Other dec oration, formal or . humorous, may be added in place of the cones and ribbon. Sprays also can be wired to a coat hanger bent into any at tractive modern shape. Other attractive ways to dec orate your front door, they said, include "gift wrapping" it or suspending small bells from rib bons of various lengths. When "gift wrapping" your door, use wide crossed strips of oilcloth, centered with a large how, a plain spray and a gift tag to bear your greetings, they sug gested. Fastening a painted and decorated cheese box, filled with evergreen and ornaments, to the ribbon will give, an unusual ef fect. Suggestion Pays OH For Kodak Employees Rochester, N.Y. U.R) The combined talents of two veteran employes of the Eastman Kodak Company have earned them a S5.000 payoff, and the company a new method of inspecting ma chines prior to installation. The two men. Edgar A. Dill and Frank O. Beuckman, both of Rochester, garnered the big gest award for a single idea in the history of the Kodak Park suggestion system. Adoption of the idea has re- I duced the cost of maintaining the equipment on which the parts are used. Another large Kodak award i of SI. 280 each went to George H. Johnston. Jr.. and Catherine Q. Widman for their suggestion concerning a method of han dling negatives in Kodacolor printing. Kodak's suggestion system, one of the earliest established in American industry, rewards ideas for making jobs safer, easier, more efficient and for reducing costs or improving quality. W.PJ The Salvation Army has a solution for persons who are having trou ble trying to select a Christmas present for someone who has everything. Maj. James H. Prout, city com mander of the Salvation Army, said his unit is using the "gifts by proxy" plan here again this year. The proxy plan is designed especially for firms and large companies who hand out gifts en masse to customers or em ployees, or for persons who feel obligated to buy a gift for some one who really doesn't need any thing. Prout explained that these people may mail to the Salva tion Army a check covering the amount of money they intend to spent on those gifts, along with a list of names and addresses of the ones to receive the pres ents. The Army then writes a let ter to each person on the donor's gift list saying that his Christ mas gift from "Mr. So-and-So" is a donation to the Salvation Army enabling some child or family to have a merry Christ mas. This proxy plan was first worked by the salvation Army in Tulsa in 1955 and now has been made a full partner in the Army's Christmas program. Bluetongue Disease Immunity Produced Chicago .U.R) Veterinary re search workers have produced a "satisfactory" degree of immu nity to bluetongue disease in sheep, the American Veterinary Medical Association reports. A vaccine has been developed which demonstrates excellent protection with apparent safety, the association said. Bluetongue disease has been found in several southeastern states in recent years. Scientists were able to isolate and identify the virus which caused the dis ease in January, 1953, and work was started on a vaccine. However, the AVMA said it is possible that other strains of the virus may appear, against which the vaccine would give no pro tection. Only Texas and Montana have more acreage devoted to farms than Kansas. Kansas has 48,611. 366 acres of farmland.
