SIXTEEN MEDFOHD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE Thursday. November 29. 1956 ! Marquette Students Object To No-Kissing Rule Imposed on Coeds Milwaukee, Wis. U.Ri Male students at Marquette university jos up in indignation today over a "no goodnight kiss" rule im posed on coeds by school officials. "What do they want us to do, become a bunch of angels?" one boy demanded after reading about the rule in the student news paper, the Marquette Tribune. Ttie paper, in its lead story Wednesday, said Mrs. Mabel Mc Elligottt university dean of women, had ordered a crackdown on girls '"who kiss goodnight in front of dormitories" for women. The rule prohibits a "public display of affection" outside any of the school's 10 women's residence halls. Mrs. MeElligott told the student newspaper the crackdown was periodic reminder of the rule that coeds caught kissing would be "campused" restricted to the campus for one week end. In general, male students were disgusted. One asked "What's the difference in front of the dorm or down on the corner?" But one sided with school officials. "The girls have been get ting out of hand lately," he said. Court of Appeals -exchanged words Wednesday in angry disagree ment over Caryl Chessman's at tempts to escape the death pen alty. Chessman, 35, was convicted In Los. Angeles nine years ago 4t kidnap, rape, sex perversion ind other crimes. He subsequent ly won acclaim for his prison written books. National Scandal In a memorandum supporting the court's '2-1 denial of Chess man's litest appeal. Justice D. L. Lernmon asserted the delay ! the Chessman case has be coitsp a "national scandal." "Chessman' has been accorded all due process except the long overdue process of his execu ioa," Lernmon said. Lernmon also took occasion to rebuke Chief Judge William Denman, who was the dissenting judge in the "court's denial of the Chessman appeal. However, the 84-year-old jus tice defended his position, declaring: "No better illustration could he had of the aphorism that 'haact cases make hard laws' than Judge Lemmon's opinion in ; denying Chessman's petition for j reheating, in this case." j Dsnjal Charged Denman held that Chessman was denied due process of law in that he was not allowed to be , present when the transcript of j his original trial was completed, j , The court- reporter had died arid Chessman claims the report er who made up the transcript ( was a drunkard. Hence, he con- i tends, the trial transcript is faulty. ! spokesmen for both sides were "very optimistic" that a contract agreement would be reached without a strike. The 25.000 members of the Commun ications Workers of America earlier authorized union officials to call a walkout at any time. To Mmt Again A 16-hour bargaining session ended shortly before 2 a.m. (EST) today. Both sides agreed to meet again this afternoon. The CWA AFL-CIO .Tuesday night voted "overwhelmingly" authorization to its officials to call out 10.500 long distance op erators. 8,200 maintenance men and '6,300 other workers if no agreement could be reached. No strike orders went out with the passage of the deadline. Union officials indicated they would continue negotiations as long as progress was being made in the bargaining talks. Oragon Not Coversd The negotiations which began Nov. 5 with the AT&T, cover every state and the District of Columbia except Vermont, New Hampshire, Montana, Oregon, Nevada and Delaware. Details of the union's demands and the company's offers have not been disclosed. Key issues included wages, working condi tions and administrative procedures. Enraged Husband Kills Wife; Friend Commits Suicide Little Valley, N. Y. 0J.F9 A young milkman, surprised in the bedroom of a housewife by her enraged husband who shot her to death, took his own life Wednesday night in front of the funeral parlor where her body had been taken. The body of the milkman, Al bert Marsh, 23, was found slump ed in the front seat of his car. Beside him were a .22 caliber rifle and a funeral bouquet of 25 red roses with the note: Returned Unexpectedly "These roses are for Sue. Life without Sue is nothing." The housewife, Mrs. Sue Ann Riggs, 24, mother of three chil dren, was shot three times early Wednesday with a .38 caliber automatic pistol by her hus band, Ralph. 26. who returned home unexpectedly from a bus iness trip and found Marsh hid ing in the closet of his wife's bedroom. "Get out," he shouted at his wife, who cringed in bed in her night dress. Riggs then rushed into another room, grabbed the pistol and shot her to death. Marsh fled after a brief struggle with Riggs. Telephoned Sheriff The husband then telephoned the sheriff's office. "I must be crazy," he said. "I just killed my wife." Police apprehended Marsh for questioning but released him. Riggs was charged with first degree murder and was held for a December grand jury after he waived examination at a pre liminary hearing. The three Riggs children, Ralph, 3, Christie, 2. and Mary. 4 months, were asleep in anoth er bedroom during the shooting. Susan Hayward Undergoes Surgery Hollywood (U.R) Actress Susan Hayward was reported in "good condition" today after un dergoing minor surgery Wednes day at Cedars of Lebanon hos pital. Her physician did not reveal the nature of the operation but said it was to correct a minor ailment. Oregon Joins Drive To Aid Hungarians Portland i'U.P.) A special Red Cross drive to aid refugees from strife-torn Hungary was started in Oregon today. The Oregon drive is part of a national effort aimed at raising S5 million. Frederick Greenwood, chairman of the Multnomah county Red Cross chapter said. American Red Cross Chair man E. Roland Harriman said that 90,000 refugees have crossed the Austrian border. The drive was announced after the Aus trian government asked the Red Cross to assume responsibility for feeding and giving needed care to the refugees in that country. Actress Eva Gabor, Husband Separate Hollywood ill.R) Actress Eva Gabor confirmed reports Wednesday night that she and her husband, Dr. John Williams, had decided on a trial separation aftfcr Seven months of marriage. Miss Gabor blamed career trouble for putting the marriage on Jhe rocks. She said her work requires frequent trips between here and New York while her husband's practices keeps him in Hollywood. I The couple reportedly split up early Wednesday. Miss Gabor wouldn't say if she planned to file for a divorce. Longview Sawmills Closed by Market Slump Longview, Wash. (U.R) The local office of the Department of Employment. Security disclosed yesterday " that five Longview area sawmills have closed due to a declining lumber market.
