The tricH is to have on hand plenty of film, flash-bulbs, batteries and necessary pho tographic equipment. Christmas in color, of course, is Christ mas at its best. And It s a wise photographer who catches it all with emphasis on close-ups and such highlights as the brightly-decorted tree, the new toys, and the expressions of wonder and delight. Those early shopping stints, the visit to the neighbor hood store Santa, the first notes to the North Pole, are all choice camera material the start of a story that builds to an exciting climax on Christmas Day. Now is tbe time to check on film, flash equipment, batteries, and the working order of that camera. And now is the time, too, to think of those photo graphic gifts that will mean so much this Christmas, and the holiday seasons to come. There's no denying that Chrismas is the best movie-making time ever. And movies can be taken with snapshot ease and economy. Lower film costs and the excellent projection results on moderate-sized screens, make 8mm movies highly popular for those family movie records. New, wonderfully inexpensive 8mm movie cameras are easy and economical to use; no focus ing is necessary in most cases, with just one simple setting all that is required. Special Permission For Bethlehem Scene We do not know when the first crib was set up as a tab leau to illustrate the nativity, but church records indicate that St. Francis of Assisi received special permission from the Pope to reconstruct the scene in the Bethlehem stable. Today the crib, surrounded by figurines of the Holy Family, the Three Wise Men, shepherds, angels and farm animals, is to southern Europe and Catholic countries what the brightly dec orated Christmas tree is to America and northern lands. First Carol Sung By Angel Chorus According to the Bible story of Christmas, the first carol was sung by a chorus of angels from Heaven the "Gloria in Excel sis" "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men." There is no fact as to why the Christmas songs are called "carols." The Latin origin of the word means "to dance in a ring," and the earliest songs were usually accompanied by some sort of dance movements. Others seem to think the word stems from the same deviation as "chorus." St. Francis of Assisi is reputed to have conducted a Christmas service singing the Gospel and giving the sermon, and is cred ited for the first significant carol. The ballad type of carol, now considered by musical writers as the true carol, is the folk song type, handed down from generation to generation.
