(International Smtndphoto) Brush Fire Expected To Be Brought Under Control Atf er Week San Bernardino U.ft) A devastating brush firs which -has Wurnecl over 15,000 acres on a 40-mile iron in nearby moun tains was expected to be brought under control late yesterday. The sheriffs office said fire fighters soon hoped ,to close in on a fivenile section still un checked. The blaze started Mon day n City Creek Canyon east or here. cTTie fire has claimed the life of one firefighter and another, James Johnson, assistant State of California Ranger from Mon terey county, was reported still in critical condition from burns suffered earlier. Also destroyed in the fire so. far were five liomes, several automobiles and a house trailer. Body of Girl Found At Foot of. Cliff Hemet, Calif. (U.PJ The body of a girl found at the bottom of a 70-foot cliff on the Soboba Indian reservation was identi fied Saturday as Mrs. Mary Sue O'Connor, 17, of San Bernardino, Calif. The nearly nude and battered body was discovered on the near by reservation Friday by two hunters. Bob Lowther, 15, and Bob Starr, 16, both of La Habra, Calif. Alvin Depew, chief deputy coroner of tiversfde County, said there was no indication of foul play .in the dfath and that the young woman's clothing proba cy w torn off in the fall. Max Schumacher and his flying companion, Cpl. Dubai Tyler. Jr., both of the El Toro Marine Air Base, were treated at the crash scene for minor cuts and bruises. Meanwhile, a timber and brush fire was reported out of control in the eastern section of San Diego county. Some 10,000 acres were reported as already blackened. Fir Adrancet The fire advanced nine miles in a six hour period and was re ported to be only 72 miles from the mountain community of Ramona, Calif., late yesterday afternoon. Sheriff's deputies evacuated two boy scout troops from King Creek ranch, four miles north east of the town of Descanso. Calif., and several families were evacuated from ranches. Some ranchers were reported backfir ing in an effort to save their homes. Rangers of the Cleveland Na tional Forest said the fire started on the Inaja Indian reservation when a small home burned. No homes were in the immediate path of the flames. Some 250 state and federal firefighters were battling the flames. A 14th-century covered bridge in Lucerne, Switzerland, is an art gallery. It shelters 112 tri angular panels painted about 1600 by Hans Wagmann and his son. Wintry Air Mass Continues to Coyer Portion of Nation By UNITED PRESS A mass of wintry air continu ed to clasp a large chunk of the nation in its frosty embrace Sat urday. Practically the entire Eastern half of the country shivered as it dug out from an uncomforta bly blanket of snow.. Although the storm, which dumped large quantities of snow on a swath of land from Colorado to the East Coast, appeared to be dying out, residents of Erie, Pa., where suf fering the after-effects by the worst snowstorm in ten years. Chicago was sprinkled Friday by a freak snowstorm that left a six-inch coating on the city's South Side, but barely stroked the northern end. Much of the snow hardened with an icy coat ing in the midst of a sudden cold front which swept the mercury down to 10 degrees above zero. Snow Expected More snow was expected over the Great Lakes area today, but New England was also to be the recipient of flurries. New Mexi co and Arizona had forecasts of light snow. Colder air accompanied the snow into the lakes regions, but the Northern Plains warmed up today, as did the upper and mid dle Mississippi Valley. The chil ly air extended through the Ohio Valley, down into the Carolinas and Georgia. The Erie snowfall, which piled up from two to three feet on the ground, caused Mayor Arthur Gardner to declare a state of emergency for the city. Rescue workers, aided by helicopters and National Guard tanks, dis lodged victims and cleared paths along blanketed roads. Other freak snow falls piled up one to two feet near lakes Erie and Ontario. Carthage, N. Y., squirmed under a 40-inch load dumped Friday. Pasadena Man Is Arrested by FBI San Francisco (U.R) Jack Chester Johnson, 26, Pasadena, was arrested here Sai:irday by the Federal Bureau of Investi gation. for impersonating a post man. Johnson received a suspended sentence last July in Los Angeles for rifling U.S. mails and won a two years' probation. He will be arraigned before U.S. Commissioner Joseph Kar- esh here Monday. The FBI said Johnson cashed personal checks in the San "ran Cisco area on the strength of the claim he was a federal employe. Egyptians Seek New Cotton Markets' Cairo (U.R) The Egyptian government has drafted a re vised foreign trade program to find new markets for cotton previously exported to Britain and France. Minister of .Commerce Mo hamed Abdu Nosier said Britain and France were being com pletely dropped from the pro gram and the gaps filled with schedules for other countries. He said recent events had dis played the soundness of a pro gram that did not rely too heav ily on only a few markets. Figures released for the first three weeks of November show ed that Italy, the United States, Czechoslovakia, Switzerland, Ro mania, Austria, West Germany and Yugoslavia topped Egypt's cotton export list in that order. Ocean Park Woman Dies After Crash Santa Monica (U.R) An Ocean Park, Calif., woman died of a hea'rt attack Saturday when her car was struck by another auto in which a robbery suspect was fleeing from police in a bullet-punctuated chase. The woman who died was identified as Mrs. Mildred Belt, 47. The robbery suspect, Maurice Farney, 26, escaped from offic ers despite crashing into a total of five cars during the high-speed The chase began when the sus pect got into a stolen sports car which police were watching. Farney's father, Maurice A. Farney, 47, of Venice, was book ed on suspician of carrying a concealed weapon while police where searching his home for the suspect. The charge was made in con nection with contracts covering manning of ships chartered by the American Coal Shipping Co., formed recently by John L. Lewis' United Mine Workers, several coal producers and rail road companies. The MEBA said it dropped out of the committee because it "can not in good conscience continue its association of almost two decades with the NMU within the AFL-CIO Maritime Commit tee." Licensed Officers The MEBA represents licen sed officers. "; The MEBA announcement said that after several weeks of negotiations for a contract with the shipping company, the ua ion learned that the company had worked out a contract with the UMW's District 50 'division which it describes as a "catch all" local on behalf of deck and engine officers. Meanwhile, the MEBA charged, the NMU negotiated a contract covering licensed per sonnel. But now NMU President Joseph Curran refused to sup port MEBA picket lines thrown up at the shipping company of fices, the MEBA said. The MEBA said the dispute would have no effect on the West Coast unless the shipping com pany attempts to take some of its Liberty ships from the Pa cific Coast reserve fleets. Sunday, November 25, I95S Olfo John Trial Ends Second Week Karlsruhe, . Germany (U.R) The treason trial of Dr. Otto John ended its second week Sat urday, and some court sources predicted it will last until early next year. Only 20 of the 100 witnesses expected to be called have testi fied so far. Court officials said the slow pogress may extend it beyond the Christmas holi days. John, 47-year-old former head of West German's security ag ency, has testified three times in his own defense and was ex pected to take the stand several times more. He was called to the stand shortly after the trial opened. Nov. 12 and spent the first two days relating his life history and telling about the events of July 20, 1954, which led to the charge of treason. He is accused . of defecting to Communist East Germany, but contends he was drugged and abducted across the East-West border. LOGGER KILLED Siletz U.R) ! Harold Angel, 18 -year-old logger for the Geogia Pacific company, was killed Thursday while working near Siletz. Witnesses said the youth was crushed by a Tog while loading a truck. DIPLOMAT CHARGED London (U.R) Tsen Chan Woo, 45, a former Nationalist China diplomat here, has been arrested on a charge of operat ing a brothel, police said Sat urday. He was released on bail.
