Spaghetti Consumption in Italy Averages 61 Pounds This is th Year of tha OLDSMOBILE GOLDEN ROCKET Coming J j, NOVEMBER 9 Darrell Miller Go. 415 South Riverside Rome UP. Italy's consump tion of spaghetti, the national dish, has doubled from the pre war figure of 30.8 pounds to 61.6 pounds per year per person. It's being washed down with an average consumption of 95 quarts of wine yearly per in habitant. " But- despite these statistics, both (he wine and "pasta" in dustries are suffering from com bined pressures of foreign com petition, vine pests, industriali zation and substitute products. For instance, exports of maca-rorj-type products are below pre-war figures. This- is due not snly to post-war difficulties con cerning exports, but also to the fact that there arc now many factories abroad producing similar foods. No Italian in his right mind will ever admit that these prod ucts can compare to the tradi tional Italian product. Still, they are buffering, considerable com petition in foreign markets. Less Is Made Another factor is the passing of many spaghetti-making con- R. C. A. Economically run industrialized plants have large ly replaced the hand-made" pasta factories. This means the potential out put has increased, but in fact, less spaghetti is being made in proportion than at any time in the past 50 years. Due to a general rise in the overall Italian standard of liv ing, actual per capita consump tion is up. but only an ever-diminishing fraction goes for export. And the total produced comes to about half what the factories could turn out, operating on a full-production basis. The 1955 production of spa ghetti came to 1.42.990 tons (of which about 74,000 tons went abroad). The potential for Italian factories is about 3,000,000 tons. The Italian wine production picture is only slightly better. Of a world total of about 22, 000.000 acres under wine culti vation, Italy, with about 4.000, 000 acres, possesses the greatest percentage of any single coun try. (Spain and France follow with about 3,500,000 acres apiece, and other countries have only small percentages of the totalj Wine Consumption Off But Italian wine production, which totaled 5.500,000 tons yearly at the turn of the century, suffered marked reduction dur ing the next 20 years as a result of the spread of Phylloxera, the wine pest. It revived, with the help of American aid after World War I, then dropped again as a result of the general crisis of agriculture starting in 1929, and reached an all-time low in World War II. In the past 10 years, produc tion has surpassed figures of the past 50 years, but world con sumption during this time has been decreasing. In Italy alone 95 quarts per year per person in 1955 is well below the figure of 130 quarts of 1910. France and Spain also have shown large decreases, and throughout the world, competi tion from beer and soft drinks has been strongly felt. In world sales, Italy leads with 20 per cent of the total, followed by France Spain and Portugal, in that order. ; SAF Chapter to Hold i Dinner Meeting Friday The Siskiyou chapter, Colum : bia river section, of the Society of American Foresters will hold a dinner at 7:30 p.m. Friday, jNov. 9, at the Jackson hotel. Nebraska Victory Omaha, Neb. (U.R) Terry Carpenter, Scottsbluff, the Re publican convention delegate who nominated an imaginary Joe Smith for vice president, won a seat in the Nebraska uni cameral Legislature Tuesday. Carpenter, a former congress man and legislator known to his home state as "Terrible Terry," unseated Amos Morrison, Mitch ell, by taking about 56 per cent of the vote from his home county district. The vote was nonparti san. Carpenter had predicted that the Joe Smith episode would boost his campaign somewhat. SadlerTWeMsBallef Cancels Moscow Visit London (U.R) The famed British Sadlers Wells Ballet to day cancelled a planned visit to Moscow because of the "renew ed suppression by Soviet forces ; of Hungarian liberty and inde- j pendence." A spokesman said "it has been unanimously agreed that in the present circumstances the pro jected visit . . . cannot take place." The ballet was scheduled to go to Moscow in return for the tour here of the Russian Bolshoi Ballet company.
