There is a feel ing in the Pentagon that the 66-year- old secretary eventually will retire and turn to cattle raising on his farms in Michi- , gan, Louisiana and Florida. He recently underwent a prostate operation. If he departs, the leading contender for his job ap pears to be Air Force Secretary Donald A. Quarles. Humphrey has denied a num- ber of reports that he will leave, 1 But speculation persists that he may not remain for a full term. He is 66 and has accomplished the biggest job he set out to do I balance the budget. If he ! leaves. Undersecretary Ran- dolph Burgess would be a like ly successor. Benson has heen under con-! siderable fire by critics of his farm program. But Mr. Eisen hower is solidly behind him. and Benson apparently likes his job. That would add up to continued cabinet employment for Benson.
