A remarkable case he des cribes is that of a soldier who, when drowsy, stopped by the side of the highway to get a bit of sleep. As he dozed in his car, he was hit and killed by a driver who had gone to sleep at the wheel. Most of us who have driven 500 miles in a day can remember times when we began to get very sleepy. Then we may have begun to suspect that we were hypnotizing ourselves, and final ly we realized that we had better stop and get a nap. Curious is he fact reported by Dr. Mac Farland that in 1949 some 60 per cent of all long-haul truck ing accidents occurred during the first 3!i hours of driving. This, of course, suggested that the men had been going without sleep before starting out on their trip. Whenever I head off a man's going to sleep at the wheel I wonder if perhaps he was a suf ferer from either narcolepsy or epilepsy. Narcolepsy is a dis ease in which a person, every so often, feels an overpowering need for sleep. I remember a banker with this disease who, in spite of everything he could do to keep awake, would fall asleep even during a meeting of his board of directors. Many Said Epileptics There is no question that many of the persons who are said to have "fallen asleep" at the wheel were epileptics. That is why, in some states, epileptics are not given licences to drive, unless for months their attacks have been kept under good control with the help of Dilantin or some other drug. A big problem that comes up is. should truck drivers and others use the "no-doze" pills which can help them to keep awake. Some authorities feel that the use of these pills of ea once mat m his experience the daily use of narcoleptics of large doses of Benzedrine or Dexedrine. even after several years, had not produced any bad results that he could detect. Recently, the authorities in the Federal Food and Drug Ad ministration have made efforts to curtail the illicit use of amphetamine by truck drivers. Their objection to such use is that some of the drivers might get to taking excessive doses while others, because of their trusting to the drug, might drive for too long a time without sleep. I know that if I were a truck driver I would not use the drugs unless perhaps in some great emergency during which I would have to drive steadily for 24 hours or more. It would be bet ter not to use the drug but, in stead, to stop and get a nap when fatigue begins to be overpowering. I.
