Every wife has a right to demand that her husband take her lor at least one visit to Brussels. Small shops displaying every type of article imaginable line the streets and boulevards for miles and miles. There are sev eral huge department stores. The Shopping centers are innumer able. These include some mag nificent arcades which permit indoor window shopping. In all shopping centers there are side walk cafes where the weary shopper can pause to get her breath renew her make-up and refresh herself with a cup of tea. However, this shopping situation must be a little hard on the bankroll of a man whose wife can't keep her buying under control. Horm and Women Continuing my research on the horses and women situation in Europe I went out to the Stockel Race Course. A beautiful track. A, mile and a half turf course, a hurdle course and a very sporty steeplechase course. There were six races on the card. One hurdle, one steeplechase and four flat. Wagering available at Pari-Mutuel windows and with bookmakers. The latter predom inate. Over 100 bookies were on hand. Minimum wager in Mu tuels, 20 Francs (40 cents). With bookies. SO Francs ($1). No starting gate. No race caller. I bought a Belgian racing form for five Francs (10 cents) and studied it carefully. I practically swept the card betting straight and place. Had five winners and one place. Radio Tuned in the radio at random and got Dinah Shore from the U.S.A. at The Hague in Holland I tuned in on the woria series. You can get all the important United States radio programs here. This is because of the United States armed forces radio broadcasting system which covers the world. Transportation No matter where you want to go in Brussels there is a street car stop within a block of it. There are 98 different street cars operating within the city limits! They are numbered from one to 98 according to route taken. All street cars have both motorman and conductor. The conductor usually speaks three languages; French, Flemish and English. Fare is four cents for any dis tance. Transfer, two cents extra. Metric System The metric system of measure ment used here requires much figuring for comparison with our method. That is most of it. The kilometer is easy. That is equal to about five-eighths of a mile. The kilo is a little more difficult. That equals two pounds, three and one-fifth ounces. So you think its easy. All right. I tipped the beam at 59 kilo on a public scale. How much is that in pounds? The meter is still tough er. A meter is 39 25 inches. The handicap at the Stockel race course the other day was at a distance of 2700 meters. How fast can you figure what dis tance that was in miles? Sidelights There are over 1500 magazines and newspapers published in Belgium. There are twice as many periodicals devoted ex clusively to sports as there are to fashions and other feminine interests. Taxi drivers here ex pect a minimum tip of 20 per cent. That's routine. Takes 15 per cent to make them happy. Most cabs are company owned, one company has over 360 cabs in operation in Brussels. Drivers are all uniformed. Cabs very clean. Rates low. Please Note Brussels hotels are govern ment supervised. Any complaints as to overcharging or other sharp practices by a hotel can be re ported to a government bureau and will be given prompt atten tion. The food in both hotels and restaurants is excellent here. The fish is especially good. M y favorite here in the fish line is Sole Bonne Femme. Delicious! The vegetables are exceptionally good. Everything fresh. Frozen food is not popular here. Salem (U.R) Gov. Elmo Smith has asked Oregonians "to exercise the privilege of the bal lot by informing themselves on the issues and candidates and then voting intelligently." Jones, Chairman 'War and Peace Available At Medford Public Library Tolstoy's classic novel, "War and Peace," called by some the greatest novel ever written, has now been filmed and is being shown in cities throughout the country. The famous book, and other literary classics that have been made into motion pictures, are available at the Medford Public library. Another well - known classic that has been made into a pic ture in recent months is "Moby Dick," by Herman Melville. It is the story of a monstrous white whale and the hate-driven sea captain who hunts "him. Other classics that have been filmed in recent years include Jule Verne's "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea," Stephen Crane's "Red Badge of Courage," Wil liam Shakespeare's "Richard III," and "Julius Caesar," Sir Walter Scott's "Ivanhoe," Hen ryk Sienkiewicz's "Quo Vadis," Daniel Defoe's "Anthony Ad verse," Charles Dickens "David Copperfield," and Margaret Lon don's "Anna and the King of Siam." t The library also has other well-known books and plays which have been the basis for motion pictures. Legion Group Cuts Visit To Mideast Cairo (U.R) An American Legion group headed by Nation al Commander W. C. Daniel, Danville, Va., cut short a fact finding mission in the Mideast yesterday. Daniel left here for Rome with former National Commanders Louis Gough, Pasadena, Calif., and Paul Griffith, Unionsown, Pa., and the chairman of the Legion's Foreign Relations Com mittee, Rogers Kelley, Edin burgh, Tex. Griffith is a former U. S. deputy secretary of defense. Daniel said the Mideast mis sion had been ordered by the Legion's National Convention in Los Angeles in , September. Klamath Tribe To Get Timber Sales Payments Portland (U.R) Per capita payments, representing income from timber sales, will be made by "the Bureau of Indian Affairs next month to members of the Colville tribe of Washington and thu Klamath tribe of Oregon. Don C. Foster, Portland area director, said the payments would total $855,000 to the Col villes and $620,420 to the Klam aths from sale of tribal timber supervised by the Bureau. The allocation will give some $200 per member to the Col ville tribe and about S300 to each member of the Klamath tribe. Pitts, 17, Nashville, Tenn. have been given 3-year sentences in the Oregon state penitentiary for car theft. Circuit Judge Fred McHenry said he dropped any thoughts of leniency for the two soldiers AWOL from Ft. Lewis after Harris' assault of 64-year-old jailer Cliff Raber last Saturday.
