Gardner 456 Save Minors Group Picked New York (U.R) A six man committee has been formed to "save the minors" but base ball Commissioner Ford Frick said today it' has not been set up to "hand out a half million dollars recklessly." Frick said up to $500,000 has been pledged by the majors, not as a subsidy, but more as a "bank" where distressed minor leagues may go for help. In some cases, he said, there may be grant-in-aid, in others the money merely will be loaned. "I imagine that the members will hear hardship cases and de termine each one on its merits," Frick said. SPORTS Oklahomans Head College Grid Stats New York (U.R) Oklahoma, the nation's top team also leads the country's college football teams in points scored and yard age gained. The Sooners, after completing half of their 10-game schedule, have averaged 44.2 points a game while compiling an aver age of 414.6 yards per contest. Navy is the only ofher team to average over 400 yards a game with 404.6. The Midship men ran past Pennsylvania last Saturday for 488 yards, enab ling them "to move from sixth to second place in a week. Com pleting the top five in total of fense are Southern California, Washington State and Hardin Simmons. Oklahoma has also demon strated the best running attack among major schools with a 346.6 per game average. More than 30 yards behind the Soon ers in second place is Southern California, followed by Ohio State, Army and Virginia Tec'i. Pacific Coast teams have tak en a strong hold on forward pass honors. Washington State leads the country with an aerial aver age of 234 yards per game. Trail ing the Cougars are Stanford, San Jose State, College of Pa cific and the lone eastern entry, Navy. Schopf To Greet Raider Cage Aspirants Thursday Sarlo Underdog Aqainsf Miceli Chicago (U.R) Carlo Sarlo, a Chicago truck driver who has had only 26 pro fights, makes his first television appearance tonight against veteran welter weight Joe Miceli, winner of 50 pro battles who has been on television 16 times. Miceli, 27, though beaten 26 times, was a slight favorite for the bout. Sarlo, 24, who has 'lost five outings, has scored only three knockouts and has had few fights outside Chicago, although he was rated a speedy boxer. Miceli has campaigned recent ly as a middleweight, but said he would have no trouble scal ing down to 146 pounds for this bout. Sarlo never has weighed over 145. ' OWEN GOES Boston (U.R) The Boston Red Sox announced Tuesday that they will not renew Coach Mickey Owen's contract for the 1957 season. They explained they intend to carry four instead of five coaches next year. Mi B S mf Ashland Coach Ted Schopf, head basketball mentor for the Red Raiders the past 10 years, will officially greet a turnout of what is to be estimated 35 bas ketball hopefuls Thursday eve ning when the lid goes off for the beginning basketball cam paign. The Red and Black Raiders will play all their games in the college field house until the first of the year. After that, they will play their remaining schedule, largely conference games, in the Ashland High school gym. Ted Schopf will have another rough year to look forward to in basketball. Last year the Raid ers won 13 and lost 13. And with the greater portion of this year's turnout, ex-high school stars and college freshmen. Coach Schopf will have a big rebuilding job to do. Missing from last year's third Session Tonight For Auto Racers A meeting of all persons in terested in auto racing will be held at 8 p.m. today at the Greyhound tavern in Ashland. Phil Bryant, manager of Valley View Race track, has called the session. He reported that engine specifications for the 1957 season will be dis cussed. Prospective sponsors of cars and drivers particularly are asked lo attend. Junior High Gangs Scrap Cross-town rivalries this week wind up the football seasons for Medford junior high school eighth and ninth grade gridders. McLoughlin and H e d r 1 c k eighth graders are foes on Thursday at 3:30 p.m. on the Hedrick field. Ninth graders of the two schools clash at the same time out at McLoughlin on Friday. McLoughlin eleven each scored triumphs in the previous meet ings at the start of the season. Bulldog eighth graders won 21 to 12 and the ninth 20 to 0. Latest schools to feel the ire of the association were Glendale and the Oregon State School for the Deaf. Monday the association placed Reedsport, Roseburg, and Jo seph high schools on probation for use of lime on their fields. Several football players have suffered burns from the use of the lime as yardage markers.
