Almost Guaranteed Means To Predict Election Offered Washington (CQ) Want to get tome aleep election night and till know who wins the Presi dency? Then watch Connecticut and Delaware. These two East Coast states have voting machines in every precinct and the returns come in fsst. An hour or two after the polls close, while people are still voting in Colorado or California, a trend should be evident from the Connecticut and Delaware figures. Here's how to spot that trend and become a do-it-yourself po litical analyst: Remember that Connecticut and Delaware have been on the winning side in 11 of the 14 Presidential elections since 1900. Even when they've been wrong, they've been consistent. They went off in 1916, backing Repub lican Charles Evans Hughes while the country choe Demo crat Woodrow Wilson for anoth er term. In 1932, 18 years later, they went for Republican Herbert Hoover, rather than the winner, Franklin D. Roosevelt. Sixteen years after that. In 1948, they gave their electoral votes to Republican Thomas E. Dewey, not the winning Harry S. Truman. , Note that 16 year interval. They're not due to miss again until 1964. And even when Connecticut and Delaware do go wrong, they tip off their error. The three times Republicans won Delaware without winning the nation, the GOP candidate received less than 50.6 per cent of the state's popular vote a very shaky margin. -The three times Republicans won Connecticut and lost the country the GOP actually re ceived less than 50 per cent of the state's popular vote. Votes Split Up Republican candidates won by tiny pluralities because there were third party candidates on the ballot. ' Thus the unbroken rule of 14 elections in this century is: If Adlai E. Stevenson carries Connecticut and Delaware, he's elected. If President Eisenhower carries them by 2.000 votes or more, he's in for another four years. Bock Stairs: Mamie Fixed With Flowers BY MERRIMAN SMITH United Press White House Writer Washington (U.R) Back stairs at the White House: It is fortunate that Mrs. Eisen hower does not suffer from rose fever or allergy to flower pol len. When she entered Madison Square Garden in New York with the President the other night, the first lady was carrying a nosegay of red, white and blue Tlowers. As soon as she reached the stage of the hugei Republican rally, master of - ceremonies Walter Winchell did a highly un expected thing he curtsied to Mrs. Eisenhower and whipped from behind his back a "sur prise" white orchid corsage. At this point, Mrs. Ike seemed pretty well fixed for flowers, but up marched a determined lady Republican who plumped into Mamie's lap what seemed to be about three dozen yellow roses. Mrs. Eisenhower accepted them graciously and for the re mainder of the evening, sat peer ing through her private bower as her husband delivered a thunderous campaign speech. Once this hectic campaign windup week is over. Mr. Eisen hower will resume playing golf, at Augusta, Ga, within a day or two after the election. Significantly, the chief ex ecutive stayed away from his favorite golf courses once the campaign got under way in earnest. only for about an hour and even then, they didn't get into town. Mr. Eisenhower did all his politicking right at the airport. Pressman Owner of 'Germany Awake' "German Awake," a propa ganda book published in Ger many in 1933 for officials in the National Socialistic Democratic Work Party (NSDAP), is owned by Robert Hutchison, an appren tice pressman at the Mail Trib une. The book explains the back ground of Adolph Hitler's rise and some of the party's beliefs; Printed in German in Fraktur, an ornate German type, the book is illustrated with pictures that are pasted rather than printed on the pages. Some of the pic tures in this limited edition are in four colors in minute detail. Besides pictures in black and white there are several line sketches and, one four-fold fold out illustration. The book has 153 pages and is 12Vi by 9Vi inches. Hutchison obtained the book in Germany in 1944 while serv ing with an Army Air Force Intelligence unit. It is quite true that the mercu rial situation in the satellite countries of Eastern Europe is the announced reason why Pres ident Eisenhower this week is confining his campaign trips to one day at a time, returning to the White House each night even if it means long extra hours of flying.
