Penny-Wise Traveler
Finds Tax Map Useful
Chicago U.?.i If he's on his
tops, the penny-wise traveler
will go to Missouri to have his
gas tank filled and will avoid
Louisiana when buying cigarets
and Connecticut when looking
for souvenirs.
The reasons are simple eco
nomics. In Missouri the gasoline
tax is only three cents per gal
lon, the lowest in the nation.
And in Louisiana smokers are
paying the highest cigaret tax
eight cents per pack while in
Connecticut the sales tax rate of
3 ',2 per cent is the country's
highest.
A tax map prepared by Com
merce Clearing House, national
reporting authority on tax and
business law, shows that gaso
line sales or cigaret taxes have
gone up in seven states since
1955, and decreased in only one.
South Dakota is the one bright
spot in the picture. Sales taxes
dropped one per cent there this
year.
But in Pennsylvania the gas
tax went up to six cents, sales
tax jumped to three per cent and
the cigaret levy rose to five
cents.
Between these two extremes
came six other states with tax
increases: Connecticut, with the
"3 V i per cent sales tax and four-
cent cigaret tax; Texas, where
gas and cigarets now have a
five-cent tax; Missouri, new two
cent cigaret tax; three other
states with cigaret increases
New Jersey, five cents; Ohio,
three cents; West Virginia, five
cents.

Brothers Reunited After 43 Years Apart

aration of 43 years and two
wars.
Fritz Bielass came to this
country from Germany when he
was 19. His brother, Arthur, 21
at the time, stayed in Germany
through both World Wars.
Five years ago, Arthur's son.
Manfred, reached his uncle's
home here after escaping from
the East German zone. Manfred
served in the U.S. Air Force and
finally was stationed in Frank
furt, Germany, where he made
contact with his parents who
had fled from East Germany.
He now has brought his par-

Mash sausage in a cold frying pan.
6 lowly fry sausage, stirring fre
quently to cook sausage thor
oughly in small pieces. Drain. Sift
together floor. Baking Powder,
and salt into a mixing bowi. Cot
in shortening until mixture re
sembles coarse corn meal. Add
milk. Blend with fork until dry
ingredients are just dampened.
Knead dough gently, about H
mintita. Roll out a boat inch
thick. Cat with 1H or 3-inch
round cutter. Place rounds on un
gr eased baking sheet. Slightly
pinch up edges of each round. On
each round, place in order tomato
paste, cheese, sausage, and ore
gano. Bake in a 450 F. (very hot)
oven about 12 minutes. Serrs hot.
