B. Our 16-year-old daughter is a tomboy. Mr. P. B. My wife is trying to make a problem child out of her. Mrs. P. B. I am very con cerned about our 16-year-old-daughter, who is and always has been a tomboy. When she was a little girl, we thought it was very cute the way Joan was on ly interested in cowboy games and baseball. Her father encour aged her interest by taking her to the games with her big brother. Now, however, she shows no interest in clothes or dating. She has developed a passionate in terest in chemistry and mechan ics. Her father encourages this. I think this is very wrong, for it take her away from the other things a young girl should care about. I have tried to arrange dates for her through the par ents of boys in our neighbor hood, but she screams at me and refuses to go. How will she ev er get married? i Mr. P. B My wife is trying to make a problem child out of Joan. At 16, it is hardly neces sary that she waste her time oh boys. Certainly there would be nothing wrong in this modern age, if Joan got an education and prepared the way for. her fi nancial independence before marrying and having children. If Joan were really interested in clothes and dances and such, I don't think I would crack down on her if she stayed within reas on. But I do not see why she should have these things forced on her if she does not want them. When she is ready for adult life, I'm sure she'll take an in terest in the things her mother thinks important. Until then, she should be let alone. Joan has too good a mind to waste it all on nothing but feminine nonsense. The Council: There are prob lems in this family, but they aren't all Joan's, nor are they of Joan's making. The problems belong rather to the mixed-up parents. Each parent has very definite ideas about what "ought" to in terest Joan, and each has atti tudes that will strongly influence and undoubtedly complicate her life. Both parents seem to see intel lectual pursuits as in direct op position to "feminine" ones. B. is right in his feel ing that dating and clothes shouldn't be "forced" on Joan. But he is all wrong in setting in tellectual interests in opposition to "feminine nonsense." Of Interest to Women What Mr. P. B. calls "feminine nonsense" has been of interest to brilliant women through the ages. As a matter of fact, many very masculine men have a strong interest in clothes, social life and cooking. Mr. P. B. him self might be a happier man if he didn't treat these things with so much contempt and Mrs. P. B. might be a happier woman if she didn't feel that a woman must restrict her interests to this realm. It is true that Joan would probably be happier if she found some pleasure in the activities of other girls of her age. Mrs. P. B. might be able to guide her gently into an interest in clothes and dating if she also showed some pleasure in Joan's passion for chemistry and mechanics. Mr. P. B. in his turn, might show some interest in seeing Joan im prove her appearance. If these parents change their own attitudes, give up their rigid rules for what they expect of Joan, they might give her a chance to develop quite natural ly in many directions at once.
