SIXTEEN MEDFOHD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE Thursday. October 23. 1336 Truman Declares GOP Fights for Too Little After It Is Too Late San Francisco (U.R) Former President Harry S. Truman told a union convention here today that the Republican party "has not blocked progress altogether" but "drags its feet and fights for too little after it is too late." He said the Eisenhower ad ministration had: Tried to hold minimum wage increases down to 90 cents in stead of $1. Stalled action on federal aid to education for three years, then offered a bill inadequate to do the job. Premii Said Unfulfilled And never made good Presi dent Eisenhower's promise to remove "the union busting pro visions from the Taft-Hartley act." Mr. Truman said the Presi dent's goals for public housing "have been lower than Senator Taffs." The former chief executive's talk was prepared for delivery before a convention meeting of the Bakery and Confectionery Workers International Union. "The danger is that, as Repub licans continue their policies of favoring the privileged few," Mr. Truman said, "more and more of the little people will fall by the wayside." "The wagf earner will join the farmer and the small busi nessman on the toboggan of falling incomes. The gaps in our prosperity will get bigger and bigger," he warned. "No man knows where it will end. but in the distance I see the glimmer of another 1929." Mr. Truman also predicted that, should the Eisenhower-Nixon ticket produce a November victory, "the center of power would shift from Eisenhower to Nixon, and that would make matters worse." "You may have difficulty in picturing Richard Nixon as Pres ident of the United States," he said. "I hope you do because the presidency of the United States is the greatest and most honor able office in the history of the world ..." "I hope you will always hold it in such esteem that you will have difficulty in imaginging it being occupied by a man like that." In Salt Lake City Wednesday night,- Mr. Truman said the "clumsy diplomacy" of John Foster Dulles and "amiable I platitudes" of President Eisen hower had caused the alliance of Kefauver To Give Stevenson Report On Party Progress En Route With Kefauver (U.R) Sen. Estes Kefauver meets with Adlai E. Stevenson today to give an optimistic report on Democratic prospects across the country. The vice presidential and presidential candidates were scheduled to meet today for the first time in more than three weeks in Springfield, 111., after Kefauver stumps through Day ton and Springfield, Ohio. !
