Hornung May Be at ' Half for ND By ED SAINSBURY Chicago (U.R) Oklahoma and the nation's television foot ball fans may get a surprise from Notre Dame Saturday, but It will be by necessity and not by choice. Coach Terry Bren nan of the Irish said today. The surprise would put the Irish No. 1 All American candi date, quarterback Paul Horning, at halfback to do his usual job of running, passing, punting et al to keep the Notre Dame of fense alive. "Among all our other prob lems," Brennan said, "Hornung has a dislocated left thumb and he can't take the exchange from center. Then Larry Cooke, our second quarterback, has a sprain ed ankle so we've had Bob Williams, our sophomore, work ing there the last two days." Mighty Tough Should Hornung's thumb still handicap him Saturday, it'll be new personnel in the same split T formation against a Sooner team that Brennan rates "mighty tough." That would put Jim Morse at one halfback. Chuck Lima at fullback. Hornung at the other halfback and Cooke or even Williams at quarter back. Notre Dame used a new "double flanker" formation against Michigan State last week, and presumably the same tricks could be pulled out of the bag to test against the Sooners. It was likely there would be some other new material, too, to upset the Oklahoma defense. He'll oppose Teddy Hall, Seattle, in the four-round pre liminary in Portland to the Ed die Machen-Johnny Holman heavyweight bout. The Puscas Hall tussle will be at 5:30 p.m. since the main event, to be na tionally televised, is set for 6 p.m. Hall and Puscas were to have met earlier this month on a card which matched Bono Olson and Sammy Walker. But the card was cancelled when Olson, found to be in poor physical shape, announced his retirement. Machen, on the basis of his two big wins over Valdes, has climbed to seventh in the na tional rankings. The bouts will start at 6 p.m. PST. 3.200 Crowd Eyed Promoter Tommy Moyer said he hoped for a capacity crowd of 3,200 in the Portland armory for the first fight in history to be nationally televised from this city. Holman expects he will have trouble. "I've been idle for about four months because of an eye in jury," said Holman. "And Ma chen is a fast, hard puncher. I'll just have to be on the look out . . . for anything." If he gets by this battle, Ma chen is hoping for a shot at the Floyd Patterson-Archie Moore fight winner next month. Templeton, famed track and field coach, said that the times and distances recorded at the last couple of meets on the West Coast indicated that some of the boys had not trained all summer long. ' "The times recorded in some of the races in the last two weeks wouldn't take our boys past the semi-finals in the Olym pics," said Templeton. Templeton admitted that most of the boys laid off after the close of the trials in June to make sure that they wouldn't go stale.
