The boy, son of Mr. and Mrs. Norvel T. Jones, was injuried while skating at the Rogue Valley Ballroom skating rink. McKay, 25, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph McKay, 1010 Sunset ave., Medford, rec ently was promoted to private first class in Denver, where he is a physical therapy technician at the Fitzsimons Army hospital. McKay entered the Army in October 1955 and was stationed t Fort Sam Houston, Tex., be fore arriving in Denver. ASSIGNED Capt. Berry F. Longwill, son of Frank Longwill. Applegate. and Mrs. Jennie Wolf, Medford. recently was assigned to the transportation supply section at Fork Work general depot. He entered the Army in 1940. ON LEAVE Specialist third class Robert Sands, son of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Sands. Central Point, is home on a 30-day leave. He recently completed a two-year tour of duty in Alaska at Ladd Air Force base with the Army. He will report to Camp Hanford for duty. NEW ASSIGNMENT Major Jack L. Paxton, who attended Medford schools be fore entering the Army, recent ly completed a tour of duty in Goeppingen, Germany. He is now assigned to duty with the ninth infantry division at Fort Carson, Colo., according to in formation received here by Mrs. W. H. Eaton. 835 East Ninth st., family friend. Major Paxton, a 1934 grad uate of Medford High school, made his home during his school days with an uncle and aunt, the late Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Anderson. The officer is married and has three sons. ARRIVES HOME A2c Johnny C. Rutherford, son of Mrs. Merle Van Hoosen, 103 Genesse st., Medford, has arrived home after serving in Guam for 18 months. He will report to Homestead Air Force base, . Miami, Fla., upon com pletion of leave. He is a grad uate of Medford High school. HOME ON LEAVE Private Francis R. Durante. 18, son of Mr. and Mrs. Francis A. Durante. 1313 Prune st., Medford, is home on leave after completing recruit training at the Marine Corps recruit depot, San Diego, Calif., and advanced combat training at Camp Pend leton, Calif. Pvt. Durante enlisted in the Marines in June after graduat ing from Medford High school. He will report back to Camp Pendleton. Wignall, 64, of 623 Palm st., Medford, died in a lo cal hospital Saturday afternoon. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday afternoon in Chapel Mortuary. Following ser cies the body will be sent to the Downs funeral home in Albia, Iowa, for services and inter ment. Mr. Wignall. son of James and Ella McNeil Wignall, was born in Hines, Iowa, Nov. 7, 1891. He served in the signal corps of the Army in World War I. On July 22, 1920, at Albia, Iowa, he was married to Tillie May Holden, who survives. Mr. Wig nall was a telegrapher with a pipeline company until his re tirement a few years ago. The family came to Roseburg from Illinois in 1946, and moved to Medford in 1948. Besides his wife, Mr. Wignall is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Gleniss Cady, of Portland, and one grandchild. JAMES MILLER James L. Miller, 70, of 304 Fourth st.,. Phoenix, died in a local hospital Saturday morn ing. Conger - Morris Funeral home is in charge of arrange ments. INGRID BERKSTROM Mrs. Ingrid Bergstrom, 209 Fourth St., Phoenix, died at a local hospital Saturday after noon. Perl Funeral home is in charge of arrangements. LOUIS A. PORTER Louis A. Porter, 67, resident of Medford for the past 20 years, died at a local hospital Friday morning. Mr. Porter, who lived at 2120 Barnett rd., was born at Smith Center, Kan., on Dec. 19, 1888. He was a metal worker by trade and a veteran of World War I. He was a former member of the American Legion. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Mary Porter. Medford; two daughters. Mrs. Mary Eek, Jack sonville, and Mrs. Frieda Fears, Medford: two sons, Louis Port er and Robert Porter, both of Medford; three sisters, Mrs. Mar tha Shift, Colorado Springs, Colo.; Mrs. Esther Gableman, and Mrs. Ruth Greenwood, both of Salina, Kan.; one half-brother, Charles Horner, Beverly, Kan., and six grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at the Perl Funeral home Tues day at 1:30 p.m., with the Rev. James W. Neely of the First Bapist church officiating. Inter ment will be at Siskiyou Mem orial park. FOREST A. BRANHAM Forest A. Branham, 82, res ident of southern Oregon for the past six years, died at a local hospital Thursday afternoon. He lived at Butte Falls, Star route, Eagle Point. Mr. Bran ham was born at Holinford, Minn., on June 7, 1874. He had been a lumber worker for many years. He is survived by one son, Clifford A. Branham, Dorris, Calif.; two daughters, Elsie M. Baker, Eagle Point, and Lola Davis. Roseburg; four brothers, GeOrge. Canby, Noah, Corning, Calif., Jess, Salem, and William, Roseburg: five sisters, Mrs. El izabeth Ramey, Glendale. Ore., Mrs. Martha Webley, Wilson Creek. Wash., Mrs. Nancy Dean, Glendale, Mrs. Maude Baker, Glendale. and Mrs. Effie King, Canby; five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. She was born Feb. 25, 1884 in Kansas. Her husband. Frank Lee Vaughn, died July 20 of this year and was buried in the Woodville cemetery at Rogue River. Hollis Doe Found Guilty by Jury Pendleton U.R) Hollis Doe was convicted of man slaughter late Friday by a jury of eight men and four women. Doe was convicted of the slaying of William Manzanares Jr. last month near the Eastern Oregon state hospital here, re portedly in a fight over a wom an. The verdict was found to be unanimous when defense attor ney Ralph Currin polled the jury, Currin said he had not given thought as yet to an ap peal. Umatilla County Circuit Judge William W. Wells said sentence would be pronounced Wednes day, Oct. 24, at 9 a.m. Weather Break Eases Vancouver Flood Threat Vancouver, B. C. The Hedrick Junior High school PTA held their first meet ing Oct. 15. Vincent P. Bevis, Native of Medford Dies Here Thursday Ferdie Hubbard, 56, native of Medford, died at a local hospi tal on Oct. 18. He was born in Medford Sept. 17, 1900, and lived at 134 South Ivy st. His father, the late Fortunatus Hubbard, was one of the origi nal organizers of the local Hub bard Brothers firm and his mother, the late Tresea Hub bard, was the daughter of John and Mary McKee who came to the Rogue River valley by oxen team in 1852. He is survived by a sister, Mrs. Aletha Foy, Seattle, Wash., and one brother, Earl F. Hub bard, Anchorage, Alaska. Both arrived in Medford Friday to at tend the services. Services will be held at the Perl funeral home Monday at 1:30 p.m., with the Rev. George R. V. Bolster, rector of Saint Marks church, officiating. In terment will be at' Medford I.O.O.F. cemetery. John Frohn mayer, student body president, gave a short talk on the duties of the officers and student coun cil. Hedrick Red Cross home room representatives attended a Jack son County Junior Red Cross meeting Oct. 16, at Jacksonville High school to plan the Junior Red Cross program for the com ing year. Junior Red Cross representa tives from junior and senior high schools in Jackson county from Hedrick than from any other school attended. Hedrick has volunteered to entertain at rest homes. There also will be another Thanksgiv ing Basket drive this year. Among speakers was Mr. Sig erist, who recently returned from Latin America. He told of the Junior Red Cross program there. The next meeting will be at Crater High school. The high school a cappella choir presented a concert at the Hedrick Junior High school as sembly, Friday, Oct. 19. The choir under the direction of Lynn Sjolund, sang sev eral songs including, "Awake, Awake." "I Love You Truly" and "The Fiddler." They sang several selections from "The Stu dent Prince."
