Camp Fire Girls Get Support From Crusade (Editor'i not: Thii is mother in a series of articles discussing agencies served through contributions to the United Medford Crusade). Camp Fire Cirls have progres sed a long way in the 47 years since the organization was found ed. There still is a long way to go. in extending the services to all girls who wish to join the Camp Fire program. The leaders' association in Medford is part of a nation wide youth organization which was started in 1910 by Dr. and Mrs. Luther Halsey Gulick who were assisted by a group of prominent educators. From the small beginning in Lake Sebago, Maine, Camp Fire has grown to be an important part of life in more than 3,000 American com munities. Ideas Fostered Ideas fostered by Camp Fire have become rooted in girls' thinking concerning the con structive use of leisure time. Learn by doing, the philosophy which underlies Camp Fire act ivities, was set by Dr. and Mrs. Gulick as a basic principle. Emphasis and activities center ed around the home, as well as development of self-reliance out doors, is one of the contributions Camp Fire has made and con tinues to the development of future homemakers. Another basic principle of Camp Fire is that which is em bodied in the motto, "Give Serv ice," the third point of the law of the Camp Fire Girls. The community has benefited by Camp Fire Girls' constant and willingness to help a good cause and to improve the community. Two Principals The two principles and others stressed by the Gulicks are an integral part of Camp Fire to day. 'Know thyself" may be called the basis of Camp Fire's current theme, "Together We Make Tomorrow." Girls explore their own talents, skills, hopes and dreams. The girls learn how their particular talents fit into the overall pattern of community living, and how they may best utilize them, in combination with those of other people. New bry that there was nothing in Oregon statutes requiring him to comply with a request from Multnomah County District At torney William Langley that dis tribution of voters' pamphlets be stopped. Langley had asked Newbry to hold up distribution, now one third completed, on grounds that it contained what he called "pre judicial material" written for Attorney General Robert Y. Thornton, a candidate for reelec- ing in Camp Fire know there are many girls in Medford who want to join the organization, but to bring Camp Fire to those who want and need it the num ber of groups must be increased. To have more groups, volunteers are needed. Because Camp Fire is a com munity affair it receives support from the United Medford Crusade.
