October 18. 1S56 Adlai Denounces Nixon as Man of Many Faces and Exponent of Expediency En Route With Stevenson U.Pj Adlai Stevenson, using some of his sharpest language of the campaign, denounced Vice President Richard M. Nix on on Wednesday night as a "shifty" exponent of expediency and a man of many faces. He said in Flint, Mich., the vice president was unfit for the responsibility of public office and warned that if Republicans are reelected that Nixon might become president "at any mo ment." "Who can say they have seen his real face," Stevenson said. "There is no man who can safe ly say he knows where the vice president stands. This is a man of many faces." The Democratic presidential nominee also added several new blows at former Gov. Thomas E. Dewey of New York which were not in the text. He charged Dewey was using "the same rusty weapons of sar casm and ridicule" and said he "carries more weight than any one else in the Republican Party today except Mr. Nixon." Charges Creeping Complacency Stevenson said he was devot ing comment to Dewey because the twice defeated GOP presi dential aspirant had spoken in Flint Tuesday "as a principal spokesman for the President and the Republican Party.' Moving into Ohio today, Ste venson charged that the admin istration is suffering from creep ing complacency and treating the farmer as a poor, trouble some relative. Stevenson concentrated on the plight of the farmer as com pared with the protection af forded General Motors by the administration. He said a Democratic admin istration would "restore true parity of income" to the farmer with price supports that were not "collapsible," protection for perishables, the soil bank and food stamp plan and new meth ods of getting farm surpluses to the hungry overseas. "This administration has treated the farmer like a poor and troublesome relation," he said in a speech prepared for afternoon delivery in Akron, his third railroad stop of the day in Ohio. "The farmer does not want hand outs, all he wants is a fair share", Sevcnson said. "And he needs the protection of his gov ernment to get it." "That's one way to pick the men who will serve the people's government, but it's not the Democratic way and we'll do it differently next January," he said. "We won't look just to the biggest corporations. We won't go just to the richest money makers. We will go to the men who have proved they under stand the people's needs and who have proved they want to meet them." The so-called tin cans for packing food actually contain 96 per cent steel. Radar Device To Aid Airplane Navigation Clifton, N. Y. !U.R) The government division of Allen B. Du Mont Laboratories, Inc., has announced development of an automatic radar device for air craft, which will provide clearer navigation landmarks and can help prevent air collisions. Du Mont engineers said the new device, designed specifical ly to complement airborne radar equipment, is the "clutter-operated anti-clutter (COAC)." It uses impulses returned from a "cluttered" target to adjust the radar set automatically to each element of the target shown on the screen. Get Doan's Fill today 1 Provisions of Zoning Ordinance to Include Agriculture Listed An agricultural zone with provisions concerning use of buildings and maintenance prop erty has been proposed as an amendment to the city zoning ordinance. The Medford city council Tues day called for a public hearing on the proposed zone Nov. 7. The ordinance was recommended by the Medford planning com mission after a hearing several months ago. The zone proposes that no building or land shall be used, erected or maintained within the agricultural district except for eight uses. Uses Liitd They include one-family dwel lings, golf courses operated for commercial uses, agricultural uses which include field crops, truck gardening, berry crops, 'established orchards and nurser ies, and farms including raising and marketing of poultry and fowls. Other uses include farms that maintain cattle or horses, rid ing stables, dairies, sheep or goat raising, dog kennels, rais ing furbearing animals, keeping of not more than six swine, and other agricultural enterprises not detrimental to the public welfare. Also accessory buildings, such as garages, living quarters and barns essential to operation of agriculture, and roadside stands for selling products produced on the property where stands are located. The amendment provides that no stand shall exceed 200 feet in area. The proposed ordinance slates that buildings can not be erect ed unless certain property areas are maintained in connection with such land use. Goat and cattle dairies or hog ranches must have a minimum of 20 acres. Dog and cat pounds and riding academies must have a minimum of five acres. Less Than Two Acres Tracts of land within an agri cultural district with less than two acres shall be limited to the uses permitted in a single family dwelling district and raising poultry, fowl and do mestic animals, except pigs, with four provisions. They are (1) that cows, horses, sheep or goats can not be kepi on lots having an area less than 10,000 square feet and under no circumstances shall they be kept for commerical purposes. The number of fowl or rab bits shall not exceed one for each 500 square feet of property, provided that no roosters over the age of six months shall be kept. (3) The number of colonies of bees allowed on a tract shall be limited to one colony for each 1.000 square feet of area. (4) Barns or pens for fowl and colonics of bees shall be located on the rear half of the property, not closer than 70 feet from the front property line and not closer than 50 feet from any residence. House Investigates Political Influence Washington (U.R) House in vestigators today summoned a construction company official for questioning on whether po litical influence helped his firm win a $43 million government contract. Testimony by the official, Randall Crcmer, opened another round in a House Government Operations subcommittee's in vestigation of an expansion pro ject at the government-owned nickel plant at Nicaro, Cuba. Cremer's company, the Freder ick Snare Corp., was awarded a S43 million government con tract to expand the nickel plant after Cremer conferred with Re- j publican National Chairman Leonard W. Hall. The Democratic - controlled subcommittee has charged that Hall "cleared" the construction company for the contract after Cremer assured him that its top ; officials were all Republicans. : The subcommittee has invited Hall to testify on "any. part he may have played" in the award of the contract.
