By JOHN MOREHEAD United Prees Correspondent Denver, Colo. (U.Ri The "coattails" of two presidents are waving in the Colorado cam paign for the U.S. Senate. Both former Gov. Dan Thorn ton, a golfing partner of Presi dent Eisenhower, and his Demo cratic opponent, John A. Car roll, confidant of former Presi dent Truman, have accused each other of "coattail riding." Carroll, 55, a Denver attor ney, was closely linked with the Truman Fair Deal administra tion both as a member of Con gress from 1946 until 1950 and aa a White House adviser fol lowing his defeat in a race for the Senate by GOP Sen. Eugene D. Milliken in 1950. Carroll accuses Thornton of riding Mr. Eisenhower's coat tail. Thornton says Carroll had to ride Mr. Truman's coattails In 1948. Provm Vote. Getter Thornton, 45, a wealthy cat tleman who wean the label of "Texas sharecropper's son" as proudly as he does his high heeled cowboy boots and 10-gal-lon hat, was one of the first to support Mr. Eisenhower's nom ination In 1952. Thornton's fight for a pro Eisenhower Colorado delegation to the 1952 Republican Nation al convention left political scars which have never healed. But, a proven vote-getter in two races for governor, he received the senatorail nomination by accla mation at the Republican State convention. When Sen. Millikin announc ed his decision to retire at the end of his present term in Jan uary, Thornton was believed to be the ideal candidate to run against Charles F. Brannan, for mer sercretary of agriculture in the Truman cabinet and then the favored Democratic candi date. Democrats and Republicans both saw the Senate race as a debate between Brannan and Thornton over farm policy. Mr. Eisenhower had named his friend Thornton to head a na tional campaign to explain and defend the Republican farm pro gram. But Carroll nosed out Bran nan by 1.987 votes to win the Sept. 11 Senate primary. Carroll, who lost Senate rac es to Millikin in 1950 and Gor don Allott in 1954, is attacking the Eisenhower administration and comparing it unfavorably with the Truman Fair Deal. The self-styled "Sicilian fakir" earns his living by swallowing all manner of hardware, which he claims is digested in a "sec ond stomach." Doctors said he collapsed and fainted during a meal of nails in an open-air Tractor Company Files Circuit Court Suit Haupert Tractor company, 3610 North Pacific highway, Medford, has filed a complaint in circuit court against Fred and Earl LaBranch, co-partners in L. and L. Logging company. The tractor company charges the defendants with failure to pay $1,071.51 owed to the plain tiff for merchandise and labor. When Carroll won the nomination instead, Carroll and Thornton staged a one hour television debate from Den ver. Thornton said the Democrats represented "socialism." Car roll replied that the so-called "socialistic" administration of the late President Franklin D. Hoosevelt had made possible the enrichment of northeastern Col orado with the Colorado-Eig Thompson trans-mountain wa ter diversion and reclamation project. Thornton attacked Carroll's record on subversive control le gislation. Carroll, interpreting it as a question of his patriot ism, said, "I have been in two world wars. Let him (Thornton) tell where he was during the war." Thornton said that he had of fered his services to the war ef fort but "had a little trouble with a club foot" and also had lost a toe in a gunshot accident as a youth. Carroll proposed statewide debates, marching "shoulder to shoulder to tell the people what each of them will do if elected." Thornton rejected the propos al and replied, "We'll be debat ing from here on out." Location Notices Filed in Courthouse Location notices have been east Jackson county.
