The Oregon Tublic Utilities Commission to day had reached no decision on whether to follow the lead of California in suspending a pro-4 posed Southern Pacific rail schedule of three Shasta Day light trains per week between Portland and Oakland, Calif. Commissioner Charles H. Helt- 7el said part of the problem hirged on the Oregon commis sion's power to order suspen sions and reinstatements of ser vice. This power is now being tested in a ca.e before the State Supreme Court. Meanwhile, the California commission, on its own motion, ordered an investigation into the "adequacy and sufficiency" of Southern Pacific passenger serv ice to all points in California. Margaret Sullivan's Whereabouts Mystery New York (U.R; The where abouts of actress Margaret Sulla- van remained a mystery today ' The 45-ycar-old stage and screen star forced the Columbia Broadcasting System to cancel a television show Monday night when she failed to appear to fill a starring role. The mystery deepened with reports that Miss Sullavan 'had become ill and gone to a hos pital. Later she was reported well and staying with friends. She also was reported to have flown to Switzerland to visit her daughter, Brooke, who was secretly married in Paris. Producer Lcland Hay ward. Miss Sullavan's former husband, contacted in California Tuesday night, said Brooke was living somewhere in Connecticut, not in Switzerland, and that she had been married last summer. S.P. Timetable Rejected The California PUC also re jected the SP timetable filed Oct. 4 by which the railroad sought to cut the daily service of the Shasta Daylight to three times a week. Rejections of the timetable means that Southern Pacific must continue daily service be tween Oakland and Dunsmuir, Calif., since those two points are within the jurisdiction of that commission. The California group, how ever, left the way open for SP to file formal application for a service cutback. That would mean public hearings before a PUC examiner. Animal Trainer Dies After Clawed by Bear Libertyville 111. iU.Ri An ani mal trainer was clawed to death by a 500-pound bear Tuesday night while his fiancee and a friend tried to lure the animal away. Paul Lemery, 28, entered the European bear's cage for a train ing session. His fiancee, Shirley Rodriguez, 23. said she was get ting a muzzle for the beast when she heard Lemery shriek. Miss Rodriguez and Roland Racine, an employee, dashed into the cage and tried to beat the huge bear away from its victim with a pike pole and a broom. When force failed. Miss Rod riguez offered the bear, whose name was "Hans," a handful of sugar while Racine ran for help. He returned with Robert Bclle feuille, 28. who had a .35 caliber hunting rifle. The man and woman distract ed the bear while Bellefeuille took aim and shot the beast be tween the eyes. Three-Vehicle Crash Reported by Police Vehicles operated by Vincent Thomas Sakraida. 33. of Grants Pass. Henry Harold Rowell Jr., 15, of 521 Edwards St., Medford, and Larry Kenneth Tolle, 16, of 910 South Stage rd., Medford, were involved in an accident near the intersection of Orchard Home drive and South Stage rd about 7 p.m. yesterday, according to the state police. Police said the Tolle vehicle was stopped in the eastbound lane on South Stage rd. and the Rowell vehicle was stopped on the west shoulder. The Sakraida pickup truck was travelling east and did not see the Tolle car stopped until he was too close to stop, police said. Sakraida attempted to drive between the cars and skidded, hitting the Rowell vehicle. Tolle was cited for having no tail light, and Rowell was cited for having no operator's license, police said. Arrest of Minister Unconstitutional Portland (U.R) The arrest of a Cresham Seventh-day Adven tist minister a year ago for vio lation of the Green River Ordi nance was declared unconstitu tional yesterday. Circuit Judge Alfred T. Sul monetti handed down the decis ion just two days more than a year after Elder C. Lloyd Wy man, then assistant pastor of the Gresham church, was arrested by Police Chief J. D. McMillan in a test case of the ordinance. In effect. Judge Sulmonetti's ruling nullified the ordinance as it pertains to the sale of religious publications and Bibles. The decision is expected to have effects in several Oregon cities, Church spokesmen said they have been hampered in their door-to-door religious work at Madras. Bend, Springfield and other Oregon cities. Preparations Made For Roseburg Hearing Salem Final preparations have been completed for the first hearing of the state water re sources board at the courthouse :n Roseburg at 9:30 a.m. Oct. 15 and 16, according to H. E. Maxey chairman of the board. Maxey announced that seven members of the board together with the chairman and six mem bers of the Douglas county water resources advisory committee, will make a two-day inspection trip of the Umpqua basin Oct, 13 and 14. The purpose of the trip will be to enable the board to acquaint itself with the physical aspects and water problems of the area, According to Maxey, the hear ing is necessary in arriving at methods of conserving and aug menting the water resources of the Umpqua basin as well as as sisting the board in determining existing and future needs and uses of water for all beneficial purposes. The hearing is ex pected to bring out a forecast of future requirements of the Ump qua basin by local resident, state and federal agencies and private organizations as well as a review of present problems. Doria Mishandling Blamed at Hearing New York (U.R) The Swed ish American Line attempts to establish today that mishandling and instability of the Andrea Doria, and not collision with the Stockholm, caused the sinking of the Italian ship with a loss of 50 lives. Attorney Charles F. Haight cross-examines Capt. Piero Cal amai, master of the Andrea Doria. for the sixth day at the pre-trial hearings in federal court to fix blame for the July 25 sea disaster off Nantucket Island. Haight, with meticulous ques tions on technical data referring to the stability of the ship, sought Tuesday to prove that the Italian ship was off balance prior to the cra?h. Gary Dumas of Seattle signed a confession admitting starting the fire which burned through a maximum security building and caused the hospitalization of four other boys overcome by smoke, Panseko said. Eric Yarchin, superintendent of the school, said Gary told him he set the fire "for kicks. Dr. G. Lee Sandritter Sand- ritter, acting institutions direct or, returned to Olympia yester day from a firsthand inspection of the school. He praised Yar chin and his staff for their hand ling of the emergency. "Yarchin and his employees did a nice job in the face of that emergency," the institutions chief said. When it was decided Kendall had bested 73.000 other contest ants in telling why he would like to improve his home with the company's product in 25 words or less National Gypsum offic- ials contacted his doctor to see whether such an elderly winner could safely be informed. Dr. John Sample, gave his ap proval and instructed Mrs. Ken dall to cushion her husband for the news. Mrs. Kendall began by telling him that he was a fin alist. Then, without mentioning the sum, she told him he had been chosen the winner. When the great day came, company officials gathered in Saginaw, met Kendall and with Mrs. Kendall and Dr. Sample standing by, told him he was to be given a $10,000 check. All their precautions appar ently were in vain. Without bat ting an eyelash. Kendall accept ed the check with marked poise, thanked the officials and airly commented: "Things have been pretty slow lately.", Hay and Pasture Crops Neglected Lincoln, Neb. (U.RK-U. S. De partment of Agriculture studies reveal farmers generally are willing to spend money and time fertilizing such crops as veget ables but virtually neglect hay, pasture and cover crops. A recent survey showed, on the average, farmers use 68 pounds of nitrogen per acre for green and yellow vegetables and S3 for potatoes. But they averaged lust one pound of nitrogen per acre of hay and four-tenths of a pound for pasture and cover crops. The same pattern was true. with slight variations for phos phate and potash fertilizers. Embarrassing Flip Brings Man's Arrest Grand Rapids, Mich. (U.R) Donald Biggers' car trunk pops open at the most embarrassing times. Bigeers. 23, drove past a police car Tuesday when the trunk flipped open and revealed a safe containing $4,000. Biggers was booked on charges of stealing Man Made Satelife Discussed at Rotary Plans for a three-stage rocket to establish a man-made satellite revolving around the earth were outlined by Dr. Gerald Wendt, author, scientist and lecturer be for the Medford Rotary club Tuesday. In a luncheon address at the Jackson hotel, Dr. Wendt pointed out that the rocket must leave the earth at the rate of 7,i miles per second to achieve the escape velocity speed of 27,000 miles per hour. Importance Staled The importance of such an arti ficial satellite, traveling around the earth in l',4 hours endlessly and held there by centrifugal force, lies in the determination of weather changes. The speaker, in emphasizing the practical rea son for current scientific work, cited the changing temperatures of the northern hemisphere. In future centuries, the melting of the earth's ice caps would raise the level of oceans by 50 feet. It is likely that flying saucers have been actually viewed by some people and they are really phases of the current rocket re search program. Dr. Wendt told Rotarians. While the U.S. leads in atomic developments, practical applica tion of atomic energy to power production is certain to lag in this country because of the sup ply of cheaper sources of power here, such as water and coal. The Russians have made great strides in nuclear research and, Dr. Wendt said, we do ourselves a diservice to underestimate the scientific capacity of the U.S.S.R. With such scientific know-how, the Russians are creating a new civilization based upon science. Concluding his address. Dr. Wendt described recent develop ments of electronic air-conditioning and refrigeration announced by RCA. Archie Pierce, Rotary program chairman, introduced the speaker, who was brought to Medford by the Rogue Valley Knife and Fork club. Wife of Navy Mate Arrested for Embezzling Los Angeles (U.R) The 37- year-old wife of a Navy chief Boatswain's mate today faced charges of embezzling $19,000 from an Air Force officers' club at Hickam Field, Honolulu. Mrs. Margaret Clarkson, a na tive of Ranger, Tex., was arrest ed Tuesday as she prepared to board a plane for Hawaii.
