Head coach Fred Spiegelberg and his assistants, Bob Newland and Paul Evensen, sought to bolster the positions involved along, with polishing and adjusting the Black Tornado on offense and defense to meet the threat of the Klamath Union High school Pell cans. The two clubs collide here Fri day night in the second District 6 A-l and Southern Oregon con ference fray for the Black Tor nado and the first for the Pels. On the sick list were tackle Larry Cranston and halfback Gary Riley with flu and guard Terry Miller with colds. End Gary Harrington has a bad sprain of an ankle previously hurt. Frank Albert, who has been right behind Cranston at the tackle spot, Pete Kershaw, a late joiner of the squad this fall, and Jim Funston, center and line backer, who had duty last year at tackle, mostly in junior var sity play, are getting special grooming at the line position. Capable Alternate Offensively, the Tornado has a capable alternate for Riley at left halfback in Gordon Owsley. The two have shared the position. But absence of Riley would hurt the depth at the spot and cut into Medford's first line defense since he and Owsley generally are in the line-up together at the deep backs. If Cranston or Riley are not available for action or can see just limited duty, Don Lovett may have heavy service at a halfback and Bob Gee at a linebacker slot. , Harrington is one of four ends who have seen most service for Medford this fall. He won't be available for the Klam ath conflict but could Te ready for the Eureka, Calif., trip. Tornado Choice Medford will be the favorite over a Pelican crew that report edly is going through a "build ing" year. The Black Tornado will aim to uphold its high pres tige as No. 2 club in Oregon and take a second step toward a third straight district championship. Klamath on the other hand, will shoot for a stunning upset to brighten a mediocre season and continue its dominance over the Tornado in recent years. Available information shows that the Pels and Tornado will be meeting for the 41st time. Medford has won 26 of the games over the years, Klamath has claimed eight victories and seven games have been tied. In recent years, however, the Pelicans have had the better of it. Begin ning with the 1949 season they have four triumphs to Medford's one (in 1954.) Twn games have been tied. In the 10 seasons prior to this there have been four Klamath and two Medford wins and four ties. The Pelicans, who came to Medford after playing their best game of the season against Boise, Ida., last Friday, have 10 letter men back. Of these quarterback Butch Kimpton and halfback Lee McGill are the leading backfield returnees. Joe Linman and Tom Farrell, both seniors, have help ed the Pels only lately because of injuries which kept them out at the start of the campaign. Running Game Rest of the backfield threat lies with untested juniors. Among them are Richard Humphrey, Frank Ballard and Bill Shreeve. Ballard, transfer . from We natchee. Wash., is out with a knee injury. McGill suffered a knee bruise against Boise but is expected to be ready to face the Tornado. The Klamath offense this year has been mostly a running game with McGill as the workhorse. Kimpton is a good runner and may break away on keeper or optional pass-run plays. The find ing of ends to hold Kimpton's passes has been a problem some what solved by arrival of Mike Albo, senior transfer from Colo rado. Coach John McGinnis has had difficulty finding a regular Pel end combination but Albo and Teddy West could open against Medford. Since Keith Cooper suf fered a neck injury in the Reno, Nev., game about three weeks ago, Klamath tackle starters have been light by Medford standards, Paul Bilant, 187, and Dave Riley, 173. Cooper is in a cast supporting his head and neck and may be in it about two weeks more. A tackle, Fred Bar more, 212, is the heaviest listed Eight Major Grid Games Rated Even By JOE SARGIS New York U.R) After base ball fans get their last chance to "hoot and holler" today, college football, which actually has been with us for the past two weeks, in case you hadn't noticed, takes over the national sports scene for the better part of the next seven weeks. No less than eight major games on Saturday's program are rated "even" by the men who make the odds, while three other games involving the nation's top three ranked teams Oklahoma, Michigan State and Texas Chris tian are rated "out." The games in which the odds- makers were reluctant to sepa rate the opponents by even a single point involve Dartmouth- Brown, Southern Methodist- Duke, Rice - Florida, Georgia- North Carolina, Oklahoma A&M Tulsa, Iowa State-Kansas, Ore gon State-California and Kentucky-Auburn. If you're among the betting gentry, you can get 3 points if you think Tulane can beat Navy and the same spread if you like Wisconsin over Iowa. In the 19 other games for which odds are listed the spread runs from Syr acuse by 6 over West Virginia all the way to Michigan State by a whopping 25 over Indiana in a Big Ten game. Listed as 7 point favorites are Princeton over Pennsylvania, Michigan over Army, Ohio State over Illinois in the Midwest's regionally telecast game, Notre Dame over Purdue, Clemson over Wake Forest, Baylor over Arkansas, Washington over Ore gon, and Texas A&M over Houston. The figure-filberts rate Mis sissippi a 10-point pick over Van derbilt, Holy Cross a 12-point underdog to Penn State in the East's regionally telecast game, and Cornell by 12 over Harvard in an important Ivy League con test. Oklahoma's Sooners, working on a 32-game winning streak and sure-fire picks to remain unde feated at least through this Sat urday, get the nod by 21 over Texas, while TCU's Horned Frogs are rated 21 points better than Alabama. Both TCU and Oklahoma are undefeated in two starts this fall. Other games for which odds were listed include: Boston Col lege 13 over Marquette; Nebras ka 13 over Kansas State; UCLA 13 over Washington State; fifth ranked Georgia Tech 14 over LSU, and Minnesota by 13 over Northwestern. FLOWERS ON WAIVER Baltimore, Md. (U.PJ Rookie end Bernie Flowers, who accord ing to Coach Webb Ewbank "hasn't "come around as com pletely as expected," has been placed on waivers by the Balti more Colts. The cutting of the former Purdue star left the Colts' roster at the legal limit of 33. Klamathite. The Pels have some heft in Al Seigner, 198, guard, and Cal Tichenor, 200, center. Either Pete Barnhisel, 145, or Tarey Schell could operate opposite Siegner at a guard. Klamath Falls has defeated Grant of Portland 13 to 6 and Boise 14 to 12.
