By JOHN GRIFFIN United Presg Sport Writer Youth may be served some day but it will have to stand aside tonight while the Brook r lyn Dodgers and Milwaukee Braves put their hot pennant race in the hands of "old folks" pitcers Sal Maglie, 39, and War ren Spahn, 35. Now that the Dodgers are lead ing by one full game as a result of Milwaukee's pressure-packed 2-1, 10-inning loss to Pittsburgh Thursday both clubs know the flag could be riding on each pitch. The plain fact was that this defeat has put the Braves in a ' tough spot, even though Mana ger Fred Haney rightly insisted that his club has only "a bad : cough" and isn't dead yet by a long shot. If the Braves win now, it will have to be uphill the hard way. That's because the Dodgers' lead is all in the vital "lost" col umn. Each team has won 88, but - Brooklyn has lost only 57 to Milwaukee's 59. The Challenge for Braves The Dodgers have nine left, the Braves seven, and this "if table shows what the Braves ' must do from here out in order to tie for the pennant: If Dodgers Braves Must Win Win 9 of 9 Dodgers clinch 8 of 9-...... Dodgers clinch 7 of 9 7 of 7 6 of 9 6 of 7 9 of 9 5 of 7 It all adds up to the Braves must win 'em all, or pretty near all, unless Brooklyn suffers a major collapse. On the brighter side for Brave fans: Pirate Manager Bobby Bragan promises to win three of seven games against Brook lyn. If he makes good, the Dodg ers could wind up with four or five losses since they'll face Robin Roberts and Curt Sim mons of the Phils in the only other two games. Maglie carries two streaks into tonight's game: six straight wins this year and six straight vs. the Pirates, the team against whom he has the best personal record of his career 21-4. He will be opposed by right hander Ron ie Kline, who is 0-3 against Brooklyn this year. Spahn the Stopper Spahn halted the Braves' three-game losing streak last Monday by beating the Giants and again he's called on to put the Braves back on the winning trail. He'll face young Don Kai ser, 1-1 vs. the Braves this year. The Pirates won Thursday's game twice for Bob Friend, who went the route with a four-hitter for his 16th victory. Jack Shepard's seventh-inning homer gave him a 1-0 lead. Milwaukee tied the score with two out in the ninth when Chuck Tanner scored from third as Pirate first baseman Dale Long muffed Dick Groat's throw on Hank Aaron's grounder and then threw wildly for another error. Friend choked off a Braves' two-on, one-out threat in the top of the 10th and Pittsburgh got its winning run in the last half when Bill Mazeroski sin gled with one out, took second on Friend's sacrifice, and scored on Bob Clemente's single to center a low liner Bill Bruton reached but couldn't hold. Auto Race Drivers Await Valley View Track Final One hundred laps of racing at the Valley View speedway will ring down the curtain on the 1956 hardtop and stock car sea son. Drivers will be on hand from all parts of the area to try for a chunk of the big money at the finish line. Saturday night figures to be a red hot windup to a season full of thrills and spills. The championship race is over and now it is strictly for the payoff the boys will drive for to morrow night. At least $120 will be there for the main event and a lot of the drivers have ideas about how to spend it. Forty laps and a bucket of bucks will go to the winner. Out of town drivers from Cal ifornia and from the north have signified their intention of be ing on hand for this final race meeting of this season. Cars from Yreka, Redding, Crescent City, Roseburg, Klamath Falls and maybe Gold Beach are ex pected to give the local boys a real run. Lots of labor has been used at the speedway this week to put the track in top shape for the grand finale. Not only the track will be in top shape but mechan ics have been busy tuning their charges and it is antici pated that it will be the fastest field of hardtops and stock cars this year.
