w I VI Japanese R Plane Life Rafis Tokyo up The Japan ese Coast Guard said yesterday it had found five or six life rafis in the Japan Sea thought to be from a U. S. Air Force B50 wea ther plane which disappeared in typhoon Emma Monday with 16 men aboard. The coast guard said It found the rafts drifting in the Japan Sea between Japan and Korea about 125 miles east of the Kor ean coast and 160 miles due south of Vladivostok. Russia. It said no survivors were found aboard the rafts and that no wreckage of the plane had been sighted. Twenty-seven American air craft took off at dawn today to look for survivors and wreckage of the missing plane. An Air Force spokesman said the search would continue "as long as any hope remains. " Japanese ships and a U. S. Navy destroyer joined the search today. ! Silverton Couple Killed in Accident j S'eet Home 'U.Rj James : Richard Patton. 52. and his wife. -iCecile M. Patton. 45. both of Silverton, were killed aoout 9:30 a m. Wednesday when their pickup collided with a logging truck on Highway 20 near the Cascadia ranger station. Melvin R. Schlicht. 28. of Ven- ita. was hospitalized at Sweet Home with shock and other in juries. Money Bag in Night Deposit Box Looted Vancouver. Wash. U.P - Vancouver police reported Tues day that a money bag placed in a night deposit box at the Clark county branch of the Se attle First National bank was looted of about S750. Police said the money bag ap parently had lodged in the chute. allowing someone to take it out of the deposit box. County Clerk Tells Porcupine Bounty Jackson county has paid a total of $1,864 in bounty money to persons who have killed porcupines and brought as proof of their kill, the "porky" noses to the clerk's office from July 1 through Sept. 6. The figure was announced by the county clerk recently. Since July 1 this year, the county has paid a bounty of SI per porcu pine nose brought to the clerk's office. An added incentive to younger porcupine hunters has been the current porcupine reduction con test sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce and the Kiwanis club. Prizes of sporting goods are offered on a quarterly basis during the year July 1, 1956, to July 1, 1957, and grand prizes are given at the end of the year to the boy or girl between 12 and 18 years, of age who has killed the most porcupines in county forest area. Purpose of the contest is to reduce the "porky" population and thereby eliminate some of the damage the spiked animals do to county forests. With two months of the con test passed. July and August, the contest entrants had been cred ited with 527 porcupines. Their total Is included in the grand total of 1,846 for all county citi zens through Sept. 6. Police Investigate Reports of Party Salem (U.R) A 17-year-old Oregon City boy was under ar rest hare yesterday on a charge of criminal assault stemming from what District Attorney Kenneth Brown called a "juve nile drinking and sex party" in Silverton last week. The district attorney said he may call the grand jury into session as a result of police in vestigation of the party. Reports Indicated that as many as 40 youths were involved in the all night party in a Silverton home. Charges of criminal assault against the Oregon City boy in volved a 12-year-old Oregon City girl. Officers said several other boys may have been involved with the girl. Thornton said in an opinion Wednesday the State Land Board may sell or lease tide or overflow lands to the State Game Commission for boats slips without advertising for bids. Thornton also said that candi dates for constable of the Lane county District Court must have resided in" the county at least six months before election in order to qualify for office. Kefauver Sefs Busy Schedule for Visit Portland (U.R) Senator Estes Kefauver, Democratic nominee for vice president, will be in Ore gon Sept. 21 instead of the 22nd. The change in dates was an nounced by C. Girard Davidson, Democratic national committee man, and Robert Boyer, Demo cratic state chairman. Kefauver will campaign in Pendleton, Klamath Falls, Al bany, Salem, Corvallis and Springfield on Friday, Sept. 21 at the following tentative tin.es: Pendleton, breakfast meeting; Klamath Falls, 11 a.m.; Salem, 1 p.m.; Albany, 3 p.m.; Corvallis, 4:30 p.m.; Springfield, 8 p.m. Duncan Notes Lack 01 Contest for Office There has been no contest for the office of state representative in the last election or in several years in Jackson county, Robert Duncan, Democratic candidate for the state legislature, told members of local 659, Interna tional Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, at a meeting in the Labor temple Monday evening. Duncan said the last Jackson county Democrat to hold the of fice of state representative served 18 years ago. The candidate added that rep resentative government does not exist unless the voters have a choice between candidates and that every citizen has a duty to register, to inform himself, to vote for the candidate he thinks is best qualified for the office and when possible, to offer him self as a candidate. Duncan informed the group that if elected he would consid er the labor group's views on proposed legislation along with views of other interested groups and individuals. However, he said he would not guarantee to labor or any other group 100 per cent compliance with their desires. 500,000 Shares of Edison Stock for Sale San Francisco (U.R) A group headed by the First Bos ton corporation and Dean Witter and Company has offered to the public 500,000 shares of S25 par value Southern California Edison Company common stock. Archbishop O'Hara Dies in Milan, Ifa'y Portland (U.R) Archbishop Edwin V. O'Hara died Tuesday of a heart attack at Milan, Italy. The 75-year-old archbishop of the Kansas City, Mo., Catholic archdiocese was in Italy for an international conference. He was well known in Ore gon, particularly for his work in social legislation. He became a national figure in 1913 as a re sult of his assistance in drafting Oregon's minimum wage law, a pioneer step in labor legislation. He was a priest at St. Mary's cathedral here at the time. Multnomah Police Raid Gambling Den Portland (U.R) Multnomah county police swooped down on an alleged gambling den on North Williams avenue Tuesday afternoon, seizing approxi mately $10,000 in cash and gam bling equipment and liquor valued at thousands of dollars. Three persons were arrested on gambling charges. Officers said a warrant for a fourth per-! son who escaped the surprise raid was still to be served. -j To gain admittance to the j four-room casino, county officers battered down rear doors to I avoid passing through the front! entrance where in Intricate warning mechanism was said to be installed.
