County Clerk Tells
Porcupine Bounty
Jackson county has paid a
total of $1,864 in bounty money
to persons who have killed
porcupines and brought as proof
of their kill, the "porky" noses
to the clerk's office from July 1
through Sept. 6.
The figure was announced by
the county clerk recently. Since
July 1 this year, the county has
paid a bounty of SI per porcu
pine nose brought to the clerk's
office.
An added incentive to younger
porcupine hunters has been the
current porcupine reduction con
test sponsored by the Chamber
of Commerce and the Kiwanis
club. Prizes of sporting goods
are offered on a quarterly basis
during the year July 1, 1956, to
July 1, 1957, and grand prizes
are given at the end of the year
to the boy or girl between 12
and 18 years, of age who has
killed the most porcupines in
county forest area.
Purpose of the contest is to
reduce the "porky" population
and thereby eliminate some of
the damage the spiked animals
do to county forests.
With two months of the con
test passed. July and August, the
contest entrants had been cred
ited with 527 porcupines. Their
total Is included in the grand
total of 1,846 for all county citi
zens through Sept. 6.

members of local 659, Interna

register, to inform himself, to
vote for the candidate he thinks
is best qualified for the office
and when possible, to offer him
self as a candidate.
Duncan informed the group
that if elected he would consid
er the labor group's views on
proposed legislation along with
views of other interested groups
and individuals. However, he
said he would not guarantee to
labor or any other group 100
